    Their objective is to try to preserve peace prevent invasions between countries and prevent another world war from happening. How countries manage themselves is none of their business.

      Came here to say this; NATO is about political stability; nothing more, nothing less.

      UN peacekeeping (another place the Canadian military is deployed) is about humanitarian need for external policing, which is different than NATO’s remit, but also doesn’t care about democracy.

      In fact, I don’t believe the Canadian military has any function that involves preserving democracy.

      Pretty much everything they do is about defending against aggressors, fulfilling treaty agreements or rescue.

      And none of the Canadian military roles are chosen by the public; they’re entered into based on the treaties and agreements signed by our duly elected representatives.

    Wasn’t it originally an alliance against the Warsaw Pact during the cold war?

    It was a defensive alliance against communism and communist Russia during the cold war. I never really understood why NATO continued after the Soviet Union fell.
