A secretive alliance Canadians never voted to join that requires this country to defend faraway lands and funnel ever greater resources to warfare is typically presented by the media and politicians as a tool of democracy. Yet, very often, pro-NATO propagandists frequently ignore the alliance’s ties to undemocratic regimes and its efforts to silence its critics.
Came here to say this; NATO is about political stability; nothing more, nothing less.
UN peacekeeping (another place the Canadian military is deployed) is about humanitarian need for external policing, which is different than NATO’s remit, but also doesn’t care about democracy.
In fact, I don’t believe the Canadian military has any function that involves preserving democracy.
Pretty much everything they do is about defending against aggressors, fulfilling treaty agreements or rescue.
And none of the Canadian military roles are chosen by the public; they’re entered into based on the treaties and agreements signed by our duly elected representatives.
