I’d really like to think that the governments of states like California, Oregon, Washington, and New York would work with Canada to resist this stupid stunt and offer to instead become canadian provinces. I mean, if we’re doing stupid shit about control of borders or whatever, and these states are already being attacked by Trump and giving more to the Fed than they’re taking back, why not just offer our GDP to Canada in exchange for a functioning Federal government, with healthcare for our citizens too?
Time for Canada to start building bunkers along the border. Deep defense. Then weapons caches around the country.
I heard that it is the defenseless arctic that is Canada’s weakpoint, due to ice melting.
Let him look all he wants. First hand he reaches out with, lop it off
I disappointed, no one said the Canadian “eh.” For the moment, the Canadians should monitor US troop movements along their border and build a wide ass minefield.
Something like 90% of Canada’s population lives within a hundred miles of the US border. How wide do you want this minefield to be exactly?
Time to kill Nazis.
Is that before or after you give them a standing ovation?
Are you Canadian? Looks like the government there is more than OK with nazis.

Are you a one day old account?
Yes, everyone is at one point. Is looking that up your valuable contribution?
Oh, didn’t look for it. I just took a shot in the dark… wow, I cant be that good
Yes you really are that good. Amaaazeeeing!!! Not only do you make incredibly valuable observations but you also are clearly more than aware of how brilliant your contributions to this community are. The whole world of Lemmy will never forget what you did on this day.
Thanks for noting it, maybe one day you too make a valuable contribution to mankind…
Hey Canada, just buy America from trump, tell him he’ll still be CEO, conclude the deal and then fire him.
Thank you.
I’m more interested in becoming a Canadian province.
And I dare say, if the US did officially go to war with Canada, New England (and probably New York) would be likely to switch sides.
And they would in all likelihood bring with them all military bases and forces within their territory.
Not secede but they could refuse to participate and could actively resist. The west coast and Minnesota might also. Lots of military probably have family in Canada also. Canada could sneak raiding parties into the US to knock out transmission lines, utilities, etc.
Why not secede?
Actually, if this rhetoric gets much worse, I’ll be in favor of a succession “dead man’s clause”. We could put forward a referendum question on the next state ballot to explicitly ask the public, a question something like “In the event that the federal government were to declare war on Canada, or demand territory from Canada, or assume control of Canadian territory or engage in military action against Canadian forces or civilians, are you in favor of recognizing federal authority to make such actions, or conversely, are you in favor of denying that authority and refusing to participate in or support any such actions.”
I mean, that’s just off the cuff, you would of course still need to get real specific with all the language and make it absolutely clear what a yes vote or no vote does. But if states ran referendums like that, it would make it exceedingly clear to our governors and sensors where the public’s opinions fall, and what their duty should be. And so then if something that truly idiotic were to happen, we’d all be prepared.
Hey Canada! I’m pretty sure you fought us over Michigan and Ohio once. Come and take us please.
this is such an idiotic comment for so many different reasons.
And yet you didn’t name a single one.
Well, okay, reasons like
And
please make it happen
Should any attempt be made, I will kill as many Nazis as I can on my way out.
Fuck trump
Fuck maga
Fuck Nazis
Fuck muskAs they say in Iran (and so many other nations), “death to America”
Give me liberty or give me death, eh.
There are plenty nazis and nazi lovers in Canada.
Sure, most of them are in Alberta.
They’re the same ones who were screaming Liberate Canada! along with the likes of tucker carleson, Theo fleury, elon musk, during the “trucker” convoi.
Tangent:
Trump was supposed to win, or at least pence was supposed to make it happen. The timing of the convoy was not accidental. There was an intent by some of the core organizers to overthrow our gov. The unity and synchronicity of the messages from figures in the us, and Russia, were also not accidental.
If anyone was paying any attention during the convoy, none of this annexing business should come as a surprise.
Sadly, I’m pretty certain some of our politicians and defense and intelligence type folk knew then, know now, and intend to do nothing to stop it, and likely assist it.
They are OC fascists but I’m talking about the massive influx of actual bonafide WW2 SS division Galicien nazis that got rescued and shipped to Canada and their offspring still honoring them. Freeland being one of them. And many in your government have no problem aiding and supporting them.
I’m sure they are everywhere in positions of power.
There was some foia request for a list of names of all known Nazis that came here.
It was previously denied twice.
Another request in pending

lol pathetic little amerikkan soldiers would last about 6 seconds in a saskatchewan winter. Sure, bring on your ‘invasion’… hahahaha
When I was in the Marines, and before I was in, and after I got out, we regularly trained in Norway, (oddly enough in an effort to dispel any notion of Russia coming west, funny) in the coldest parts of Norway. It wasn’t fun, but it’s silly to think the most well equipped and active military in the world somehow doesn’t train to fight in the cold.
I’m out now, but when I was in, I’d say the majority, a vast majority, would not be interested in fighting Canada. I can’t see America and Canada entering a war. I can see Canada capitulating to America’s demands. I see it creating a lot of bad will between Canadians and Americans, and I see the ultimate conclusion being one we could’ve worked toward together, instead of what is ostensibly bullying.
Us regular people down here are still your friends.
In Canada when your friends get bullied you say or do something. There’s some of you, but it’s mighty silent. These protests should be huge, since when are Americans passive?
Always have been 🌍 👨🚀🔫 👨🚀
Most people keep their heads down and try to lead on their lives, feeling powerless against the gov. Once people have nothing left to lose, they will start fighting back but who knows when that’ll happen.
As they say in Iran (and so many other nations), “death to America”
A significant percentage of young Iranian population is, due to being full of their theocratic leadership, full of love to America, and to Republicans even more than to Democrats, and in some sense because of Republicans seeming more likely to blow shit up. Doesn’t quite reach them that the USA will not be friendlier to Iran after that regime falls. It’s actually very convenient to have theocratic assholes in charge of a country that is very inconvenient for various logistical and military plans.
who overthrew the democratic government there and put in a dictator leading to theocratic leadership?
the USA will not be friendlier to Iran after that regime falls. The US have never been friendly to anyone, they will have no misconceptions. They are after all far better educated than americans.
And we’ll see if Iran falls before the US regime. Looks like they’re not doing too great.
A monarch. Not a dictator. There’s a bit of difference with dictators, but it’s funny how for the western world monarchy seems to be the natural form of government in MENA and West Asia, and at the same time dictators are bad, very bad and should be dealt with.
That Islamic Revolution of theirs was kinda fine before mullahs took power. BTW, one of the mojahed parties took Saddam’s side in Iran-Iraq war and would recruit collaborationists, and the general sentiment of Iranians about them is like of Russians about ROA in WWII. And guess who’d the Iranian opposition USA tried to support - right, those guys. It sometimes seems American approaches to that region are just incompetence this big and not pure malice. But then one thinks about Turkey and Saudis and Israel being “the normal” countries for Americans there - and nah, it’s malice.
A monarch. Not a dictator.
He certainly was a dictator. These 2 are not mutually exclusive.
As always the ones put in place by the west get good PR. There was also nothing wrong with Mobutu or Saddam as long as they did what was asked.
Even Wikipedia (a usually western biased and manipulated source) admits this.
The Pahlavi dynasty—Reza Shah Pahlavi and his son Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi—has sometimes been described as a “royal dictatorship”,[2] or “one man rule”,[3] and employed secret police, torture, and executions to stifle political dissent. During Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi’s reign, estimates of the number of political prisoners executed vary from less than 100[1] to 300.
What I know from the ‘opposition’ the US supports is that they chose the MEK terrorists. They simply took them of their own terror list since they can be used.
Same as they did with that horrible Jolani and his headchopper barbarians in Syria.
Yep, I didn’t say MEK because that’d be redundant information for a Lemmy thread.
And I agree about Jolani.
OK, it seems we agree in everything about Iran and USA.
What a fucking loser. Who does that to their closest ally? Hey Canadians, there are a ton of us in the US that are fucking disgusted by this that also feel helpless. Please don’t let this man make you hate all Americans. Trust me, he is pretty talented at dividing people.
Trump’s closest ally (or “dom” if you will) is Vladimir Putin.
And he would stand to gain from any damage to US and to US-Canada relations. If US actually starts fighting and fucking up everything, it takes the heat off Russia and all US aid getting canceled will not be good for Europe and especially Ukraine. But also so many other places around the world from USaid.
Its not a hatred of Americans. Its a hatred of America.
The culture. The arrogance. The lack of respect for other nations. The blatant ignoring of rules and agreements they brokered. The list goes on.
All things Americans have turned a blind eye towards for decades.
So yeah, we know not all Americans are bad but theres no denying this has been allowed to happen.
I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but I’m not quite convinced this was a legitimate victory. He mumbled something about “Elon knowing voting machine numbers” or some such on inauguration day. He’s letting Elon’s kid tell him to STFU on camera and is just sitting there taking it? Nah, something doesn’t add up to me.
Nah, it’s some hatred of Americans too.
Trump isn’t some dude who took power in a coup, he was elected by a pretty decisive margin. The house and senate are also GOP and were elected by a majority. And, this isn’t just about Trump. I clearly remember how the US verbally attacked Canada under George Bush Jr. too, because even though Canada was willing to send soldiers to fight and die alongside US soldiers in Afghanistan, it wasn’t willing to go on an adventure in Iraq too.
This is who the US is now. Some dude posting on social media that “hey, it’s not all of us” or “this isn’t who we are” or whatever is empty. If you’re out in the streets, day after day, then sure, I’ll respect that effort. But, really, the US is now the Nazi Bar, and I don’t like Nazis.
Right, unfortunately it’s not Canadians job to make sure every single American they interact is “one of the good ones.”
It’s an unfortunate guilt by association, but many, many, many of us Americans exhibit all of those qualities: arrogance, lack of respect for others, blatant ignoring of rules and agreements. Just generally being an asshole bully.
I just hope that y’all understand that those of us trying to flee are on your side 🥲
It’s the ones who want to stay behind that you should be worried about
Ehhhh, just wait till shit really hits the fan.
The ones who helped this all happen will be the first demanding to be let in because… *checks notes… They are entirely selfish and arrogant.
Give it time, and you’ll be competing with them to flee somewhere.
At some point in life you’ll realize this is about homo sapiens when they form crowds and hierarchies, and not about just America.
Nah America has serious deep rooted issues that you just cannot ignore anymore
The “its just human nature” argument is tired. Societies impact behaviour.
Yes, I know. Believe it or not, yours is from among the better ones.
Oh we’re pretty united. When some dipshit from North Dakota says he can’t wait to show us why they have the 2nd amendment and “clear out the liberal wackos” at a professional engineering conference, it really ties the population together.
The same 2A pussies who say the guns are to stop gov tyranny have suddenly become silent. I guess they just wanted THEIR preferred form of tyranny.
By “tyranny” they mean (1) being expected to pay taxes to enable society’s basic functioning, and (2) being expected to treat others with respect.
They want chaos. They figure if you shake the snowglobe hard enough they’ll magically move to the top out of their shitty life.
Who does that to their closest ally?
Someone looking to sever ties with that ally. Everything Trump does makes the US weaker - his goal isn’t to acquire Canada, it’s to damage the US.
It’s OK. We know. But the US needs to be rid of this Nazi regime.
I don’t think there’s a solution that both clears out the far-right and leaves this country intact. (And in my opinion, it should probably be like five distinct countries)

He just wants to set the world on fire.
Does he not understand that it will require a full-scale war for that to happen?
Not just a full war but constant costs for occupation with a populace with easy and common access to drones, guns, and explosives.
I think it’s unlikely that Canada would formally resist and hold the border for long… but Canadians are really fucking pissed about this bullshit.
I think it’s unlikely that Canada would formally resist and hold the border for long…
The border will fall very quickly, and that’s just expected given the 10:1 outnumbering and the amazing weaponry. Our best play is to let that fall quickly and fight a resistance, should it come to that. It’s gonna be horrific.
I wonder if there’s a plan to evacuate the Canadian leadership to some where in the far north. It probably wouldn’t make any difference because of US air superiority. But, taking the 90% of the population that lives within a few hundred km of the border is pretty different from taking the entire country all the way to the pole. It could be that setting up a functional government in Grise Fiord would force the US to actually try to hold more than just the south.
A smarter move would be to be a government in exile from England or something. The monarchy is a bit of a joke these days, but I think an invasion of a country where King Charles is officially still the monarch would force him to do something. If he didn’t, he’d lose what little remains of his power. I don’t know if he could rally the commonwealth to fight a real war against the US, but sanctions and so on would probably be possible.
As for what would happen on the ground if Canada were actually occupied. Imagine the “Troubles” from when there was a dispute over Northern Ireland. Add to that that Canadians and Canadian accents are essentially indistinguishable from American accents. Then add that there’s no way that Canadians could be kept out of the US, because of the longest land border in the world. Next, consider that slightly less than half the US are Trump supporters, and Canadian “terrorists” would have many friends in the US. Also, look at how incredibly easy it is to get weapons in the US. Finally, think about how the US has had almost no war on its own soil since the civil war.
The US is used to sending soldiers to kill and die overseas. But, look at the destruction of Gaza, and compare that to Sept 11th. Two buildings fell and a few thousand people died and the US absolutely freaked out. Just imagine how unprepared the US would be for an actual guerrilla resistance on its own soil.
Ref: Vietnam
Also assuming the US military would go along with it.
Trump is replacing the top people with fascist loyalists. It’s likely the military would cooperate.
Replacing the top people with incompetents.
Would the soldiers though? Also They cant even meet recruitment numbers
If you are really preparing for something like that, I suggest you think sabotage instead of actual fighting.
Because, first, you might want to google casualty numbers for guerilla campaigns, they won’t look nice for guerillas, and second, times change and certain countries either already have or can quickly achieve capability to just track everything resembling a human over all the territory of Canada, from space.
Of course it’s amazing that people are seriously discussing USA invading Canada. It’s no different from the Mexican wall.
The border can’t fall because even in WWI it wasn’t something intended to be held. I’m saying “even in WWI” and struggling to remember any war in history where someone would try to hold the border. Even in antiquity wars involved too much agility and maneuver for this to make any sense.
You would also have partisans in the US that would help Canada.
People would be making Molotovs in their kitchens immediately.
I’m drinking them now. I love the burn.
As well they should be. I’m furious about it even though I know it’s absolute bullshit.
If he wants to rename bodies of water to distract people from the real purpose of his occupation of the White House, fine-
But threatening a country just to smoke-and-mirrors his drifting of America? Fucking disgusting.
And the US military is absolute garbage at fighting guerillas
The US declared war on drugs and drugs won
That’s the biggest problem. You need either Canada’s consent (which he can’t get) or to win a war with Canada plus the rest of NATO.
The second problem: it would make way more sense to become 10 or 13 US states. With respect to both area and population. That would be a big disadvantage to his party in congress.
You’re dreaming if you think NATO minus the US would fight the US if the US invaded Canada. There would be some excuse made, or some technicality found.
As for becoming states, what’s much more likely is that the US would make Canada a territory like American Samoa: no electoral college votes, no senators, no congressional representatives, not even US citizenship.
This is why it’s very evident that it’s a distraction from the grift.
Can you elaborate? I assume you mean there’s a grift at play. What is it?
The US government coup in broad daylight. Plus whatever the fuck else he’s doing that’s not making it into the news cycle because of other shit taking up the time.
Everything
Typo. Meant to say distraction. Fixed it.
That would be a big disadvantage to his party in congress.
Would it though?
Most of the western provinces are very conservative. They’ll just gerrymander everything to give the more liberal sections one or two states and then another 12 states worth of senators and reps that are purely Nazi.
Also, hes a dictator so the way people vote is irrelevant.
Hellberta and Saskabush are it for right wingnuts. Manitoba went NDP last election and BC is also NDP (in name anyway).
No
I think he imagines that starting needless conflicts makes him look tough, not like the clueless moron he is.
First of all he’s not going to be a casualty, or so he thinks
I’m definitely serious about Scarlet Johansson sitting on my face. That’s more likely to happen than Canada becoming part of the US.
What if she farted? Probably worth it.
That is a risk that I am willing to take.
Turnip and his cronies so desperately want to divert everyone’s attention from the dumpster fire they lit that they’ll say anything … me and my moose are on stand by for any invasion.
He should make Mexico a state and the border crisis will vanish just like that.
We should keep going until we reach Antarctica.
No that’s why he wants to drill baby drill. To bypass all of the third world borders and get directly to Antarctica without having to deal with them.
Putin wants the US, Canada, Greenland, and Russia, all under Russian control as the globe heats up.
The Arctic sea will become more important than Panama. Which is why trump is also eyeing Panama.
Welcome to the new Soviet union, comrade!
Just yesterday I’ve seen a humorous post in Russian TG. In short, it was that if just Trump’s re-election and his friendly remarks towards Russia without anything of substance made all the Russian officials and “patriots” drop all their “our special way” and “friendship with China” crap and start celebrating, then probably the easiest way for USA to solve any Russian mischief permanently would be to offer Russia to become a state (but that won’t work, because US states don’t have their own presidents for life). And the usual old Soviet jokes about declaring war on USA, then surrendering.
