On a related note, how did anyone ever learn to get good at Goldeneye? I played it for the first time with a mock N64 controller the other day and holy hell, it was scuffed.
There was no standard for how FPS games were played on a controller at the time. Dual sticks weren’t even a thing yet. You learned the controls and it was fine. Nowadays it’s awful with the default scheme, but you can actually get pretty modern controls by choosing the 1.2 Solitaire setting in the options and binding the left stick to the C buttons, the right stick to the analog stick, and rebinding the rest to whatever feels comfortable. This is even possible on the Switch using the controller remapping feature.

It was so much slower than fps games are now. Dual joysticks would have been overwhelming at the time when people were still getting used to 3D.

I love my original GameCube. Still have it hooked up to an old tube TV and there’s a lot of nostalgia around putting the little mini-CD in and booting it up. But it’s so much easier to fire up dolphin.
I got a Steam Deck recently and have been surprised at how well the 6th (GC, PS2, Xbox) and 7th (Wii, PS3, 360) generations can be emulated now compared to a few years ago. I hadn’t messed with emulating systems past 5th gen (N64, PS1, Saturn) for many years. It’s wild to me that I can smoothly emulate Dragon’s Crown, a PS4 game I currently have on my PS5, on the Steam Deck if I want, although I chose the PS3 one for less power needed since they’re pretty much identical. Even given it’s a less demanding 2D game, emulating a PS4 is impressive.
One day I’ll play crystal chronicles in coop on my GameCube with my gameboy advanced so and it will be glorious

The fact N64 games are behind a subscription is what really irks me. I wouldn’t mind paying €5 for Harvest Moon 64 - the way you could buy retro games on the wii - but having to pay yearly, for a bunch of games (many of which I might not even be interested in) that you can’t play anymore once you stop paying? Fuck that
I dislike game subscription services on principle, but at least the other guys have new games on their subscription services, not just ancient ones. Nintendo being the first to charge $80 makes it an extra kick in the balls.
Devil’s advocate here, I subscribe to movie services that are much more expensive to watch movies I’ve already seen. If playing these old games is important to me, that doesn’t seem too bad. $80 for Mario kart on the other hand… never.
I paid Nintendo 70€ once for their Bluetooth N64 controller, and I emulate the games.
I would buy the games if they offered, but I refuse to rent them.

I’ve got some cartridge from Ukraine with an SD slot in it. You can load the SD card with every ROM and then play them directly off an N64
This is great because for some reason emulators have problems with Dr. Mario but the N64 runs the ROM just fine
Krikizz Everdrive! They are awesome on every system I have them for, snes, gbc, gba, and n64. They can be picky about the sd card you use but work flawlessly once you have the right one.
Yeah that’s the one. Guess I was lucywith my SD card pick (can’t remember, maybe got the card with the unit?) but it’s been rock solid since I got it.
Nothing beats playing all the games on original hardware imo!

I agree with you, but I also recognize that saying that to someone that clearly enjoys Nintendo products would be incredibly mean. So while I also imagine what I said could be seen as mean, it is far less mean IMO than just blanket dropping the entire company.
Like, I used to love Nintendo. But when Iwata died and Fils-Aime left NoA, Nintendo changed for the absolute worst. I could not hate Nintendo more, actually. Still, I try to not be super mean to most people that like Nintendo products.
I feel the same way - I absolutely loathe current Nintendo’s business practices, but I can’t deny they make fantastic games. So if someone can afford their premium prices, more power to them. I’ll be interested to see how Nintendo does this gen since they’re pricing out the casual market that’s made them successful in the past.

Re-making their retro controllers with Bluetooth is phenomenal. I absolutely love them, I’ve bought every single one (and I will eventually replace the joysticks. That’s an industry problem, not a Nintendo problem)
But renting retro games ? Fuck that. 90€ Mario kart ? Fuck that too ! And the switch 2 price is ridiculous. I’ll stay on Switch 1 and steam deck until there is a significant drop.

The Switch never went down in price after 8 years and neither did the games. I don’t think that’s happening until Nintendo makes a console that can’t run Switch 2 games.

It is a really simple mod to make. Any modder could do it, most likely, using original controllers even- the only thing stopping it is Nintendo themselves and their copyright. Using a 2.4ghz connection would be much better than Bluetooth as well. That’s something Nintendo would have to implement into the console most likely, although I can see that being doable.
Plus, their controllers are only really “good” for nostalgia reasons. They’ve been improved on in every way by others.
IMO they haven’t done anything good for the industry at all lately. I’m not saying the other consoles have either, I think they’re all shit. Mainly because of exclusives. Fuck that entire concept at it’s very core.
Hardware exclusives, OS exclusives, etc are all bad.
Nintendo is going the extra shitty mile with the way they handle copyright in particular, but the entire console industry is corrupt.
If there is a machine with enough computing power to run a piece of software, it should be able to do it, period. That is the technological ideal that should be aimed at. Not the “how much can I charge for the ability to play this game” idea.
The hardware for those mods costs as much, if not more, than the entire controller from Nintendo.
2.4 GHz is complete overkill for old games that used to poll the controller 60 times a second anyway. On top of that, it always requires an adapter, which can be inconvenient on the go. Even if they built it in on the Switch, I don’t care, I mostly use the retro controllers on the Steam Deck.
Those controllers have been improved upon, true, but they are what those old games were designed for. The N64 controller especially is annoying to replicate with modern controllers.
Console exclusives are bad, but consoles in themselves are a useful part of the industry. They provide a hassle-free experience for players, and a stable target for game developers. They’ve used their position to be parasites, that’s true, but they don’t have to be to survive.

I got a little emulation console for £120 (Retroid Pocket 4 pro, see my post history) 2 months ago and haven’t touched my Steam Deck or gaming PC since. Highly recommended.
I forget which nintendo console it is, but emulating’s actually MORE accurate than the console since some ceramic thing is degrading in it. I think its the NES but don’t quote me on it. Was one of the reasons TAS verification was failing on actual hardware when it had previously passed.
SNES. The sound chip slightly degrades, and since the CPU waits to sync with it, the overall timing of the system is affected.
Buy ~25 games new when they come out for the N64. Amortize that out over the next 25-30 years. Thus spending $50 a year playing N64 games.
