The core concept is good, it makes me think of Vine. However it’s a shitty proprietary spyware. so fuck TikTok.

By the time I became aware of its existence it was already massive and I found no appeal in using it, so I never made an account.

Hearing my younger cousins talk about it made me feel like I was finally part of an “older” generation.

It is another cancer for profiling one’s own stupidity for the selfish generation who, with no sense of protection on data and privacy of others, are only concerned about stuffing the Internet with their trash.

I find the app obnoxious, even when it’s running smooth (unlike on older devices).

Another toxic Instagram-like bait for everyone superficial & with short attention span.

I like it. The content has no substance, but that’s a feature. go there only if you enjoy goofy dances or lipsyncing. If you expect political commentary or educational content you’ll be disappointed.

And your experience will be much better if you follow your IRL friends.

I agree with you, but there is a wealth of valuable educational content on the platform. I’ve learned a lot about animals, ADHD, and gaming history on the app. I don’t visit the side of the app that gets spicy with the politics, so I can’t say how good the political discourse is on the app, but from the little bit that has made it to my FYP it seems decent enough.

If you’re looking for heavy-hitting, well-sourced content, TikTok isn’t the place to go. But if you want quick lil snippets of information, it’s a wonderful resource.

I haven’t used Tiktok ever, but I hear it’s a good destination for fun content. Is there a way to access Tiktok on the desktop, possibly an alternative frontend from the official one? Similar to libreddit for reddit, Bibliogram for Instagram, Whoogle for Google.

I have once made an alternative frontend for tiktok to bypass the indian tiktok ban. but I abandoned it because it was too much work to keep it working when they frequently make changes to the api and website. I don’t think anyone will be willing to maintain such a mess so there won’t be any alt-frontends

To be honest I kinda feel like too many young people are wasting their time on it and not doing more constructive things with their time. Like seriously have you seen young people these days mindlessly scrolling on Instagram/Twitter and watching TikTok all day long? On top of that TikTok is most likely spyware.

It is the same with all other social media. What is the difference between wasting your day in Reddit, wasting your day in Lemmy, wasting your day in DickCock, wasting your day in Twitter

sure, people always waste their time, but it used to be actual social interactions, which are actually helpful and constructive. the difference is that modern social media is designed and adjusted for maximized eyeball metrics. if you specifically design and develop an app to make the user more and more addicted to it, so you can profit from advertisement, it is your fault. considering everything else it does to you, such as impacted self-esteem, algorithmic exposure to controversial material, and trained quick gratification-seeking. it’s pretty damaging for society as a whole.

The creative possibilities of the format interest me to a certain degree, but I’m far too privacy-minded and social media-averse to ever use it. I’d consider using a private and FLOSS clone, but that’s unlikely to happen.

That it makes people anxious. A lot of people that use Tiktok say that they can’t watch a 10 min youtube video because it’s too long and that isn’t normal. This does’t happen only with TikTok but with all social media that gives you constant stimules, Instagram is another one that does this too. And it is spyware btw.

It lowers the barrier of entry for many new content creators. And does boost some of the previously suppressed voices.

If you are disciplined and learn to tame their algorithm to your will, you can discover many rich cultures in action that you never knew even existed.

Agreed 100%. The marginalized voices who I previously never or rarely heard has been invaluable. There is so much to learn from marginalized voices who normally don’t have a platform.

That’s not to say TikTok is free from problems. It absolutely does fail to protect marginalized voices from things like harassment campaigns. Both from mass reports and hateful comment spamming.

The content is really good. It utilize open creative culture. Good political content. Very addictive. Spyware. China controlled.

We should take inspiration from tiktok, because it has some really great features. Duetting, stitching and creating sounds in particular. It is super fun to interact with content creators.

I tried it… realized that the format pretty much precludes anything I’m interested in watching and that was it. Clearly I’m not in the target audience.
