Good! I think it’s important we incorporate more first nations’ language in the names of our places to recognize this land used to belong to them. I think it’s a great initiative for reconciliation.
I feel the same way … especially when it replaces the names of such terrible characters that did so much damage and destruction to a people in the past.
I’m indigenous and my family suffered and survived the residential school era.
One consolation for me is that forever after, the name of our nation’s capital will always be an ingenious word … Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Ottawa … the name of the people known as ‘traders’ … which is what the word means in many Algonquin related languages such as my own in Ojibway-Cree
Ontario … the land of lakes, or beautiful lakes in the Iroquois language
Canada … Huron-Iroquois word for ‘village’
I’m sorry for what your family went through with the residential schools
However, I agree it’s very cool they kept native names for our capital, most provinces and territories and cities
I really wish in Québec we could replace all the names of Saint-whatever with the original native name of the place at the very least.
Worth it just to see chuds’ heads explode.
