I kinda regret donating now lol
Sadly this is why I did NOT donate. I’ve been on Lemmy since it was lemmy.ml and holy shit the hate I got. People calling me CIA for posting articles from NPR in a NEWS community. They have a right to believe what they want. Again, that’s why I’ve moved to PieFed Social. Again, power of the Fediverse. If you don’t agree with the route the devs are going, either work on your own, or support someone working on an alternative. Maybe it’ll create silos, but those silos all work across each other, so not really unless they cut each other off. I’d rather support Rimu though personally.
LMAO, if it’s a recurring one just redirect it to your instance instead, let them have their small bump for the month lol
I donated both to my instance when they asked and to the Lemmy dev team. I don’t do monthly payments (subscriptions and donations) because I’m bad at organization and want to make it easy to keep track of my expenses.
I’m from South Korea. I hope dessalines would shut up about North Korea anything.
One of the very first bans I caught on Lemmy was pointing out to some tankie that I actually have family in China, speak the language, and have been there many times, and was therefore more qualified to comment on Chinese politics than some edgy western teenager.
What are your opinions on it?
It’s complex and my interaction is mainly with fairly educated and well off Shanghainese who aspire to have their children leave China. The Fudan to Harvard pipeline, as it were.
People are proud of what China has accomplished, but many educated Chinese do want more. They understand that the party holds them back, and that a lot of oppressive Chinese policy is driven by, “protect the sins of the father” stuff. They are thoughtful, philosophical and very aware of the world outside both Shanghai and China.
I will admit that my language skill is nowhere near good enough to really get into it, so some of this is definitely vibes. In a weird way, urban Chinese have a lot in common with older US neocons, in that they hope globalization lifts them up, but they are also wary of western liberalism and its perceived desire to destroy their cultural folk heroes. Even though they understand their heroes are flawed, they don’t want to see them through a westernized lens. Again, these topics are really pushing my fluency.
Most of them are legitimately scared of talking about certain topics. My grandfather in law was an academic, and was persecuted during the cultural revolution and lost a hand at some point but nobody will discuss how. He told some of the story on his death bed but I do not understand his dialect well enough to know more than it was maybe a farm accident, but that might be a euphemism.
That’s horrific.
What about china’s communism and capitalism?
May I recommend the wonderful Piefed.Social? :-)
We have pie! And our main dev isn’t participating in the “be the most cringe person on the Internet” contest!
“If you’re from this area” MFs when my Australian ass shows up:
“This is democracy manifest!”
I watched a video about that guy and his story is crazy.
I’m curious now. Do you remember what the video was?
Thanks!
> Hungary is excluded from the list
In general, I do agree that we must learn from the successes of past systems, but we also must learn from their failures, or else we’re doomed to repeat them. Issue is, these people that are usually from western countries that like to pretend everything bad Stalin did is fake news by the capitalist class, just like our far-right likes to pretend many things the nazis did are just Stalinist propaganda to make everyone right of Lenin look bad.
Democracy is unironically good, and the main issue is politicians conning their voter base, not that we have the wrong kind of strongmen leaders in position.
“Gee I wonder why people are so mad at us for building this platform”
Lemmy is gonna get forked if this guy won’t get a grip on himself
If Lemmy was written in a more popular open source language it would have been long ago lol
Russia: Is imperialist settler-colonial regime that conquered and settled while genociding much of native siberian, kamchatka populations etc.
Dessalines: If you criticise Russia you are an imperial colonialist.
tankie triadists: If you family members were genocided by russia, good. They were nazis.
The devs should be invisible if they want their project to succeed like a California wildfire. This hurts Lemmy’s donations.
Not necessarily a bad thing. There are multiple interoperable “threadiverse” platforms already. I like Lemmy currently but I’d happily switch to an alternative, and financially support them, if like the UX and the devs are less toxic.
i’m really eying piefed as the future of this communication strategy
I’ve been looking at Piefed and Mbin long-term. Don’t think I’m ready to make the change yet, but when Federation is more reliable, I’ll probably make the move to one of them.
The current Piefed instances unfortunately don’t seem to show what they federate with. I personally would not join an instance which federates with lemmy .ml anymore, for example. But yeah there sure are a lot of options popping up which is great.
I’m a huge fan of piefed.
once it has app support and an instance as clearly aligned with my politics as slrpnk.net i’ll probably move over
Interstellar is almost there but it still doesn’t have notifications unfortunately. It’s also limited to I’m pretty sure only one instance at the moment.
It looks to me like it supports multiple. In fact, it has a default to anonymous kbin.earth setting that I don’t think that you can remove even if you add accounts on other instances.
You actually can remove the guest kbin.earth account, you just have to add a different account and switch to it first.
Weird how they didn’t ban that meme with the map showing Crimea as Ukrainian
Saw this and was struck by how close the outline looks to a contiguous US map.
The irony that most tankies are in the bubble.
They what they are doing. I don’t know or understand why but they can’t be that delulu IMHO
The devs are the biggest problem with lemmy. Sure, there’s hexbear and whatever else, but the devs need to be better than most. A sane person sees that kind of post, and they leave before they even give it a chance.
Sadly this is very true. And I literally said as much to nutomic directly last week. In the thread on world soliciting donations. Not even a reply. Not serious developers. Just kids with a few coding skills. Who are going to do what they want to do, because they want to. And if you have a problem with that then that’s your problem. Not theirs.
As of this writing, I don’t think that any of the viable Threadiverse Lemmy alternatives (mbin, piefed) support native mobile clients via the API.
investigates
Hmm. Apparently that’s not correct. Interstellar can handle both mbin and piefed. It’s not in F-Droid, though.
Interstellar shows up in fdroid when I search for it. So I’m not 100% I may have added another repository.
I say fdroid. I was mistaken. I’m currently using droidify with the Izzy on android repository enabled.
Yeah, I needed to do that to get it installed, trying it out right now.
It feels more-responsive then Eternity, and the dev appears to be more active, but I did notice that it doesn’t appear to yet support monospaced blockquotes — just colorizes them differently at the moment. Probably some other stuff. Definitely usable, though.
EDIT: Note that I’ve only used it on a lemmy instance, not mbin or piefed, so I can’t speak as to the support there.
Currently I’m using Voyager. No one client has everything I want yet but it’s pretty close Interstellar looks wise would be a close second. It works pretty Snappy but it doesn’t have user tagging and a few other things that I like.
I’m glad to be finally able to share Interstellar which supports Piefed as well as Lemmy and mbin. still work in progress though.
I’m from Japan. Does this mean I can say “Fuck colonists, fuck tankies!”?
Please do. And don’t forget that most “Tankie” regimes,
Russia, China etc. have large settler colonial histories, especially Russia.
Done.
Let’s see how long it takes⏱️.
[person from Poland, the Baltics, or Ukraine speaks up]
“No not you”
the Baltics
Funny you mention that…from the directors cut:
LMAO
I’m from the Baltics.
Fuck those guys.
This. Fucking fellow butthurt belters.
Especially funny given Dessalines IS from that “SHUT THE FUCK UP” region, yet is seemingly unable to recognize the irony.
Seriously. If they think the US people on Lemmy are anti-Russian (which, they are, in an abstract geopolitical-college-seminar type of way), they have literally never interacted with people of a certain generation from one of the former Soviet republics.
To them it is personal. They will punch you.
I’m from Finland and I’ll gladly say fuck 'em. And if you complain, we’re going to have a problem
