(and that’s just what we see them doing publicly… lord knows if anything is traveling through any hidden channels etc…

Their Shock Doctrine approach (thank you Naomi Klein) has been incredibly successful. Reading about history in my youth, I now understand why evil prevailed then as it is now. I was looking back at times of immense tyranny and thinking “why didn’t everyone just rise up against them!?” Some are fully onboard, others partially, but many are detached, struggling to survive. The rest of us do what we can, when we can, but disjointed and unorganized.
It’s a whole lot of “please will somebody DO something!”, but the modern Democrats are not an opposition party, ever. The news media is complicit as well. There are a handful of judges and attorneys who are doing their damndest, but this is no longer a country of laws (for the rich and powerful).
The country is geographically massive and your average citizen is both poor and uneducated, both politically and otherwise, by Western standards. Now that large swaths of worker’s livelihoods are being devastated they may have more time on their hands.

The US political system is thoroughly broken but it’s not changed much leading up to the Trump era, it’s really the news media that made Trump happen right now.
It started in the 80s with cable news and continues today with toxic podcasts and social media. People are like your annoying ex-girlfriend - they don’t want to be told the truth, they just want to be validated. Billionaires and con artists (and billionaire con artists) have figured out how to use newer forms of media to exploit that tendency and I think it’s still getting worse. Eventually like all predators they’ll overconsume their prey but there’s a lot of suckers in the world for them to run through first.
The Democrats literally kept shifting right until they finally were endorsed by war criminals. Just because they were socially left didn’t make them in any other sense actually left. And the GOP aren’t socially right, (No problem with Thiel) they just use wedge issues, in conjunction with the Democrats, while both parties moved so far economically right, they voted to allow themselves criminal activities withheld from Joe Average, like insider trading. Martha Stewart was extremely wealthy when she was convicted of that, but she wasn’t a politician, and yes, women are still an underclass. And I don’t think that really matters, it’s just another dumb wedge to keep the plebs infighting.
I wholly agree none of us want the truth, but seek validation and continue to wallow in our victim mentality. There are exceptions, but few and far between.

That’s thanks to the duodenum of the congress-beast, Mitch McConnel, who held up so many federal judge appointments during Obama’s last years in office because it was “too close to an election”. But then shoved in a new judge when RBG died two months before the 2020 election before she was even cold.
This is what most sane countries would call a “constitutional crisis”.
