Kamloops and Merritt are junctions for major highways between other parts of the province. In Kamloops the #5 runs Southwest to Vancouver and North to Valemont (a bit past there is the #16 to either Prince George or Edmonton).

Traffic headed from Calgary to the West Coast will pass through Kamloops and then the #1/#5 to Vancouver, while the the 97/97C connect southward to the USA through Osoyoos.

Merritt gets a share of the traffic on the #5 or 97C

There’s a LOT of people and vehicles coming through, lots of “interesting types” moving products of likely varying legality, and plenty who may mark either Kamloops or Merritt as a place to stop overnight on their journey, or to drop off/retrieve items from one of the many storage warehouses. In either city, auto theft -especially trucks - is pretty common and one “hot” vehicle may be abandoned in exchange for another.

It’s not hard to imagine that some people who may interact with such activities - either by choice or as accidental witnesses to crime - may upset off the wrong folks and be disposed of in any of the many off-road logging trails or backwoods locations off the highways.
