That would be a nice feature, unless I’m missing it

You mean you need an extra button/link on the interface? The options provided by your os / browser aren’t good enough? (Either middle click or Ctrl+click on PC, long tap on mobile)

Ok I didn’t understand the request. I think not opening in a new window would not be a problem if by hitting the “back” link it would take you back exactly where you were before opening the link (as reddit works I think, I remember it opening a modal window).

Anyway if this gets implemented It would need to be a setting as some people (yeah you guessed right I’m part of those) would find that annoying, I don’t like a website deciding for me where a link should be opened (unless again it’s opened in the same window but in a modal).

I rather use middle click on my computer and on android the lemmur client works exactly as reddit.

I’ve already implemented it as an extension a few weeks ago, in addition to a few more features I wanted in Lemmy, but the Firefox addon store had problems and was not accepting and addons. Not sure if it is fixed now.

I remember someone else asked the devs about this and they said it’s not a good feature for accessibility.

That’s correct, it breaks accessibility. Also I don’t understand why ppl can’t do either a middle mouse click, or on mobile touch and hold. The net is pretty scatterbrained with not knowing which clicks are gonna open up new tabs, why not just have it uniform, explicit, and accessible friendly.

Makes sense to me. Middle-mouse button opens in a new tab though instead of a new window. Though the argument about accessibility falls apart if you make it a setting that is not default and is specific to the user.

I think, the question here is why add code - that will have to be maintained - for a feature that is already implemented in your browser?

I understand that mobile users have to add one touch to achieve the same result but PC users Litterally only have to use just another mouse button, that does not seem to be that big an adjustment.

If that is really important I read down this post that someone implemented it as an extension, maybe that’s the way to go, or use a mobile app, as lemmur which works as intended?

If I understand correctly, this is a feature that would only benefit mobile users who either way have workarounds available.

I’m not saying it should never be implemented but there could be more pressing issues to address.

3 that I can think of that open up things in new tabs by default, are new reddit, startpage, and google.

I just checked all of these with incognito tabs to make sure none of my cookies were effecting behavior. They all do not open in new tabs or windows by default (both old and new reddit tested). So I’m not sure what you’re on about. Tested in Firefox.

This really would be great to be the default for link opening, rather than having to work around it

    • Are you just going around to year+ old threads and posting on them?

Check the GitHub if a feature req. for this exists. If it doesn’t, then add one. The developers aren’t likely to see your random comments on ancient posts.

Oh wow, I have no idea how that happened! I was on an app, maybe the sorting is a bit off. I’ll see if I can recreate it to figure out what happened.

Edit - there seems to be a few old posts from various instances showing in the .world feed when sorted by All and Hot - but that’s across the website and apps, not specific to an app. Maybe it is people somehow digging them up, but I didn’t do a search or anything like that to get to this post - it was just in the All-Hot feed and no one else had posted before me. Looking at the docs, sorting should be Hot: Like active, but uses time when the post was published.

        All-Hot feed:

https://lemmy.ml/post/60804 this post as an example also has some new comments on it, but I can see how that would end up in my feed as there are comments from earlier today before mine.

If you’re suddenly seeing old posts being commented on and it has only started today, maybe there is an issue after the latest update? If it is all working as designed, not sure how I would have got to this post. If I’m not understanding the sorting correctly, can you explain it for me please if you get time?

Don’t really have the time to look into it any more, but you may see more of this for whatever reason!
