It’s such a ridiculous claim - I don’t know why he picked Tutanota, of all providers. If you’re trying to make it sound plausible at least choose one in Canada, or a Five Eyes country.
For what it’s worth, I was repeatedly harassed by users of Tutanota (I knew who it was, I was looking for proof to get a restraining order), and they stated that short of an international police investigation resulting in a local warrant, they wouldn’t disclose anything – even for people who were violating their terms of service (and therefore should have no expectation of protection under their privacy policy).
