In my circles it was beat the elite 4 with a team of 6 butterfrees they all merged to a special evolution called butterfat. Ground out 6 butterfrees and was still disappointed despite my skepticism
I think Missingno actually being real exacerbated all the rumors. Missingno sounded like complete bullshit until your friend showed you how to do it. Once you had Pokemon over level 100 you felt like any of these rumors could be real lol.
Pikablu (Marill) and gen 1 Togepi seemed very reasonable in that period before the release of Gold and Silver. Misty had a Togepi on the show, and there was promotional material leaked in a few places with Marill.
I was too dumb as a kid to beat Yellow - solo Pikachu (Thundershock, Thunderbolt, Thunder and Slam) wasn’t making it past the Elite Four so I did believe for a long time that you’d get a Togepi or Mew or something if you won.
I think we need one of those “I made a real artistic render of this child’s drawing” thing where someone makes a professionally produced game out of what some AI hallucination thinks is how games work.
