We need to escalate faster and hit harder in our tariff war with the US. That’s the argument the most recent Hatchet episode. The reasoning makes sense:

  1. The uncertainty around tariffs means that businesses will decide to relocate away from Canada, even if tariffs are never fully implemented. It’s just easier to set up shop in the US and skip the tariff risk entirely. The longer the uncertainty drags on, the worse Canada’s position becomes.

  2. Trump and Musk are doing so many ridiculous things that the US public isn’t focusing on the trade war with Canada, which means they aren’t putting pressure on their representatives to end the trade war.

  3. As time goes on, Canada’s unity will fracture. Individual provinces will cave as they receive individual concessions.

The argument is that we should keep export tariffs on potash, energy, and other stuff we’re selling into the US so that there’s significant short term pain. That pain will convince Trump and co to back off on tariffs and return to our previous relationship.

The US stock market is shitting the bed, there is not a whole lot of business confidence being built there.

That said, Canadians are over invested in US equities and a reliable way to keep the pressure up is for Canadians to swap their retirement portfolios out of the US market.

As an American , do it. The only thing that is going to pluck this flourishing weed of fascism from our garden is a cleansing fire , and the sooner we have food riots while the world watches with polite interest the better. I’m sorry to put you in the position of saving America , but clearly the American voters aren’t interested in the job.

I hate to break it to you, but Americans are the only ones who can save America.

Nothing we do will make the slightest bit of difference if your people don’t come together and save yourselves.

The rapture is not coming. There’s no Superman waiting to swoop down from on high. You have to stand up and do the hard work of fixing your problems. Stop waiting for someone else to do it for you.

Bro I know. I KNOW. But if it takes an economic disaster to wake up enough people and get them to join the fight then I’m throwing gas on that fire too.

More export tariffs on the essential things they can’t quickly replace (and Belarus, Russia are only alternatives for Potash) even if it is a provincial tariff cash grab is good. Alberta tar sands oil has US customers that can only use that oil (until Venezuela is next US friend), and they need to spend $20B and 5 years building an alternate refinery. Uranium, also mostly SK, only has Russian alternatives.
