And now Papa Smurf wants to see a revolution get organized against this on the grounds of them clear cutting oak trees, culling poor vulpines to near extinction, and leaving small woodland villages consisting of mushroom style housing.

I’ve always thought a sci fi/fantasy themed one would be neat. I’d name it “The Shire at Kessel Run” and it would have streets like Enterprise Way and Baggins Court. Who wouldn’t love to live at 42 Chewbacca Drive?

Sycamore Grove is located near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, next to a rail yard. The last time there was a grove was about two thousand years ago. Also sycamores are not native trees in the UK, so the last time there was a sycamore grove was never.

When you’re making a meme, put at least some effort to make it correct.

They tore down a huge chunk of forest here, which was mostly oak and pine, and named the neighborhood that replaced it redwood, a tree that isn’t found anywhere near here.

Bonus round: If an apartment complex is named [feature]-view, such as Valley View or Ocean View, you can be certain no such view exists.

    Interchanges, plazas and malls

    And crowded chain restaurants

    More housing developments go up

Named after the things they replace

    So welcome to Minnow Brook

    And welcome to Shady Space

Well it all seems a little abrupt

No, I don’t like this change of pace

Even worse, naming them after some ego-stroking, bald, bespectacled, insignificant little councillor

This happens in the UK a lot - behold the point where George Govan Road meets James Ingles Crescent

    Lemmy: Man fuck housing developers!

Also Lemmy: Man I cant find a house!

Edit: Yes affordability is the problem, but if demand keeps outrunning supply the situation will NEVER improve. The only way landlords will start to bring their prices down is when the tenant is the one with options.

If we dont build more demand will just keep outstripping supply more and more.

So they are building these for the fun of it?

The more houses built the better supply gets, the better supply gets the more prices will drop. Every one of these thats built and someone in the inner city scrapes together the cash to buy in suburbia frees up an apartment.

The more houses built, the more for private companies to buy up and try to flip or sell rent at higher prices.

Thats a seperate part of the same problem. They already have private buyers beat on buying power, less supply doesnt hurt them at all.

Lemmy can’t find affordable real estate, not houses. Big difference.

Single family zoning and urban sprawl is terrible.

Single family zoning is terrible unless you’re wealthy enough to enjoy it.

When done right, incredibly inequitably pleasant and convenient. Garages and driveways and street parking, freestanding walls, personal gardens and patios… some green spaces might even be left nearby for the fauna and flora…

(Obviously a McMansion in a desert with zero walkability doesn’t fit the bill.)

Do note this is a description of an inequitably pleasant luxury that’s obviously overall bad for humanity 🌈

The thing is Lemmy is a pretty terrible cross section of society. Theres plenty of people in inner city apartments with solid careers who are fed the fuck up with living in an overpriced shoebox when they could buy a house in the suburbs, but those are overpriced too.

The more affordable all types of housing get the more everyone benefits, more supply is the only way to counter more demand.

No, people can’t afford houses, of just about any kind. Even shit tiny high density apartments are starting to become unaffordable even when you’re looking outside of downtown centers

It’s because all north American devs make are “luxury condo towers”, cramming as many units into a 20+ story, slap on a concierge, pool, gym and party room somewhere and then call it a job well done.

And you can thanks NIMBYs and zoning for this. There’s clearly a missing middle.

There were more single-family homes bought by private purchasers in 2023 than in any previous year in record. People can and are affording houses, Lenny is just locked into its talking points.

We don’t need more blobs of suburban “neighborhoods”. Urban centers should be renovating/repurposing vacant properties and infilling empty areas. It’s a matter of building more densely and not tearing down nature for the sake of private equity firms bottom lines
