I think it’s that if the switching fails, I’ll be left without any job and risk homelessness. And that the general narrative I hear is that “we should be grateful to have a job at all”.

    I think what you’re trying to say is that the current job has put OP in the position of being economically unstable, so it’s worth taking a risk to find a job that leaves them with greater economic stability in the long run. Does that sound right?

      Yes more or less. If you are afraid of switching jobs you can be easily exploited. So it is better to do preemptive risk mitigation to ensure that you are not in such a precarious situation any longer.
