Just thinking out loud with all the current buzz - Anyone on here connected to National Capital Freenet? Would they have any interest in hosting a Lemmy instance for locals by donation (like they do with email, but donation scaled appropriately for whatever costs they take on)?

Always good to add another node, and from the outside this sounds like it would be in their wheelhouse (non-corporate, low/managed cost digital communication access).

Yep, still kicking! Only stayed on my radar because I like browsing very old, but inexplicably still hosted personal webpages once and a while. Don’t think NCF still has any (/bait for people to prove me wrong with links), but Magma (Distributel now) had a bunch last time I went diving.

This is VERY premature, but I’d love to see a bolstering and resurgence of local internet non-profits as gateways to stuff like Lemmy, Mastodon and other open services.

same here. I had a NCF account almost 30 years ago - back when Archie was the king of the internet!

I was thinking about this, at least just an instance your account would reside. Then you could just sub to other communities on any other instances.

Bingo. There may be room for smaller, locally focused communities as well, but my real interest is just having the account. Really lean into that “fediverse = email, but different” stuff.
