NEW YORK (AP) — Europeans still aren’t buying Teslas with figures out Wednesday showing sales plunged for a fifth month in a row in May, a blow to investors who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now.
Tesla sales fell 28% last month in 30 European countries even as the overall market for electric vehicles expanded sharply, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The poor showing comes after Tesla’s billionaire CEO had promised a “major rebound” was coming last month, adding to a recent buying frenzy among investors.

Talking to family, coworkers and friends: the public image of Musk took a long while to destroy (thanks to no-one but Musk), and Tesla is connected to it 100%. These my peers only just about got to where this is now the majority opinion.
FWIW I’m seeing more and more new electrical cars on the roads, none of which are Tesla. And a lot of those who drive one feel compelled to apologize for it.
First-mover advantage has historically led to complacency. Sure, Tesla was first to scale in the U.S., but then Musk started focusing on the Quixotic quest toward self-driving – which should show up just before fusion power – and forgot the expectation car buyers have of annual incremental updates, with a general overhaul every five years. Honda isn’t selling the same Civic as a decade ago.
IBM fell into this trap with PCs ahead of the clone wars. Intel is now finding out, having learned nothing from AMD’s resurgence that forced it to start competing and the rise of ARM. Tesla feels rudderless, and Musk going batshit as the public face of the company isn’t helping. Better to keep his shares and step down so competent leadership can be brought in.
Plenty more rockets he can be blowing up instead of myopically focusing on shit like the Cybertruck while running a far-right circlejerk.
Doesn’t seem to bother most people in Australia, many just use a lot of whataboutism condemning Chinese vehicles and then unironically going on about how you should ignore politics becase Tesla’s cars “are great”.

Theres also lots of competition now, we have no tarrifs on Chinese cars in Australia and BYD for example is selling well and Tesla only has 2 models here, the 3 amd the Y (RHD country).
I mean a lot of people are angry with that douche, but don’t you think the sales are down since Tesla hasn’t released any new sedan models since 2020?

While I think your comment is over simplifying the issue, there is strangely little mention that people’s animosity toward Musk are responsible for the downturn. Tesla used to be almost the only premium EV available, now there are significant numbers of competitors.
Additionally, there are too many people with similar views to him in Europe to consider it purely a revolt against him
