The government of Newfoundland and Labrador made a legislation change four months ago meant to tackle the growing number of unclaimed bodies being held in freezer units at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s — but it has yet to bury a single person.

According to the amended legislation, which was filed on Dec. 24 and came into effect on Jan. 1, Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) has the power to bury unclaimed remains after two weeks of searching for next of kin and then five days after the identity of the person is posted online on a dedicated website.

The website also has yet to launch.

What did they expect? They made this decision during the holidays. Then they need to design, build, and deploy a website. If they have employees capable of doing this, they probably already had plans to work on something else. And if they didn’t have the employees, they need to hire them.

Unless the whole idea was to just throw up a Geocities page titled “Dead People”, these things take time to do properly and respectfully.

And don’t forget, this is pretty sensitive stuff. So you have to make sure that it’s a well built website or it’s going to be a disaster. It’s not just a page, it has to have some kind of content system behind it that non-programming staff can interact with and keep up to date.

Thing is if the NL gov’t had thought this was important they would have made sure IT staff was available. By not doing so, and with 27 unclaimed bodies (???) in storage, they’ve made it clear the announcement was made simply to appease the rabble.

Gov’ts MUST be held accountable in all things.

If you come and claim a body, do you get to keep their stuff?

And what’s the return policy like?
