Canada land has a great podcast series about Canadian competition called Monopoly.

In a nutshell: Canadian competition law is designed to create a handful of giant companies that can compete internationally. Instead, they end up screwing Canadian consumers.

I wish I could upvote this more than once. Listening to that series was a frustrating experience, and made me realize just how horrifically inescapable our concentrated corporate environment is.

Our competition law, as with most policies in Canada, exist as a response to American exceptionalism, which usually amounts to it being a maple-flavoured version of the same thing, with a french translation slapped on the back.

What we need in this country is electoral reform, so we can vote in representatives that will actually enact legislation that will balance the scales in favour of Canadian workers and consumers, so we can spend less of our collective money subsidizing Canadian billionaires just so we can say we have those here too.

I’d settle for politicians that act in good faith. Trudeau’s “tHiS iS tHe LaSt FirST paSt ThE pOsT eLeCtIoN” was a heartbreaker.
