TL;DR: MAPS.ME got bought by a payments company and completely rewritten, I want it back. I will rebuild the original app and bring it back. Sign up for this email list to get the original version back. Or subscribe to this Telegram channel. On December 20th, 2020, version 2.0 of the MAPS.ME app got pushed to the Apple App Store. It is expected to land on Android in the coming days. This is due to the app being sold off to a South Korean payments company. What changed? Compare these two images.

https://42.tut.by/712522 Google translate says there’s already a movement to bring back the old app. Anyone got a link to the movement?

I only know about https://gitlab.com/axet/omim – but that apparently died down with the maps.me project.

Yes, that is the clean MAPS.ME version I mentioned that it was in F-Droid.

    Huh

Didn’t even notice. I installed it a few years ago but never quite used it much

In F-Droid main repository there is an app called MAPS which is a clean version of MAPS.ME original app.

Was. I wanted to check it out after seeing this thread and it wouldn’t install. I found out why when I checked F-Droid on my computer. It’s gone. Only temporarily, I hope.

Well if MAPS exists and runs fine, why bother with MAPS.ME?

MAPS is not a full fork of MAPS.ME. MAPS.ME is a big platform that is more than just the app and the MAPS app is fully dependent of the main FLOSS app and this services.

https://f-droid.org/es/packages/com.github.axet.maps/ but maybe speaking with the developer would be better to know in which parts is dependent.

OSMAnd is an alternative to it anyways but the source code requires a lot of cleaning in propietary things as far I remember.

I don’t like OSMAnd. It’s UI is just too clanky

it’s gotten way better the last 2-3 years. Did you try it recently?

                clanky

Ouch, for me is a bit complex. I won’t deny that but once you get used to it is slightly comfy or “like being in your house”.
