At least Belarus is right next door. NATO has had nukes in Turkey since the cold war. And how do you justify putting nukes across the ocean on the doorstep of your declared adversaries and expecting them to put up with that?

It would be more like Putin placing nukes in Mexico. And really more like Putin occupying half of USA and placing nukes there.

On the upside, better than South Korea building their own, assuming this is a geopolitical move to assure South Korea of the US’s commitment. But outside of that, it seems weird. The US could flatten North Korea like a bug using purely conventional means. Why get the complexity of nuclear weapons in the mix?

Why get the complexity of nuclear weapons in the mix?

Because those are not really aimed at DPRK (letting aside that funny part about DPRK being “flatten like a bug”) but at China.

For reminder: this came quite soon after China announcing they successfully tested anti ICBM missile interception system.
