A website asking me to “disable ad-blocker” has the balls to tell me I should turn off Firefox Tracking Protection. That’s like saying “yeah, we absolutely want to track you across websites, would you do us a favor and let us do it? Please :)”

That’s malware - like behaviour. Firefox should outright mark this website as dangerous. A website should not instruct its user to disable browser security features.

Good idea, should’ve done it haha. I no longer remember what website it was, but I’ve seen the same dialog appear a few times since.

If you really want to see it, you may try loading it up in archive.org or achive.today. The bonus is that the webpage now has been archived and anyone can find it if it disappears.

Also, if you install uBlock Origin, it might be able to automatically hide these access blocker things. Actually, it is totally able, the only question is if you have a block list enabled that tells it how to do so

Edit: just noticed after sending that this is a 2 years old post. Sorry! How did this get into my subscriptions feed?

I was blissfully unaware how old it was until you said something, so you’re not alone there

And to be honest, I kind of like this popup. It tells me (1) to avoid this website and (2) what extensions I can download that will cause trackers the most disruption!

Fucking mad, you should use uBlock origin, you could even make that thing disappear with the element picker mode.

I noticed recently a website explicitly asking permission to track me using fingerprinting, in the GDPR form. I thought even that was mad.

Vendors can: Create an identifier using data collected automatically from a device for specific characteristics, e.g. IP address, user-agent string. Use such an identifier to attempt to re-identify a device.

To be a fly on the wall when the offending company created the feature to build those instructions …

Out of curiosity, what is your experience like using only the browser protections and no extensions? The idea is appealing to me from a fingerprinting perspective and if you don’t see ads it might be worth looking into further.

I get no Google ads at all. The total amount of ads I get by simply using the tracking protection is like 20% percent those I get otherwise.

I could not even use reader mode to read a NYT article, the text the reader caught was about their dumb subscription.

This is a new low; not surprised though.
