Canadian industry experts, union leaders issue dire warnings about tariff effects

Several premiers are decrying U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose punishing tariffs on virtually all Canadian goods and calling for a powerful retaliatory response from Ottawa and the country as a whole.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey said on Saturday that "we’re in a moment that is historic, an existential threat to the country. It’s not just an economic attack — I believe this to be an attack on Canadians, an attack on their values, on our sovereignty.

“It’s a moment where we need to stand strong and united in such an assault,” Furey told CBC News.

Double the price of electricity sold to the US, see how long it takes Trump to roll over.

Canada holds large swathes of the US by the balls, particularly in the winter.

There is a flaw in using electricity as our mallet - the people it will hit the most are in border states (I used to live in VT which is totally dependent on HydroQuebec)… unfortunately Trump may genuinely not give a shit about a lot of the people complaining about the increased electricity costs.

I’d suggest oil - we should be moving off of it anyways so let’s just shut down the pipelines and starve the US out.

Trudeau seemed to be scared of losing Smith’s loyal support in not doing that with oil.

Disappointingly true. We should absolutely fast track LNG and oil export deals overseas. Slap on an export tariff onto oil and Hydro.Trump already kind of blinked by only putting 10% on Canadian energy, so one of his oligarchs is begging. Double it to 20%, or equalize it to 25%. At the same time increase exports to the west. Prior to the Transmountain expansion, we were doing a “pipeline by rails”. It’s suboptimal, but no one wins in a trade war but not responding means you’re going to loose worse.

Trudeau is too scared of Danielle Smith’s wannabe Vichy Canada administration.

I’m worried that this unstable jackass will use the military to force us to bow down. He’s already declared war on us, so who knows what the end game is.

BC and NF Premiers were much more forceful than Trudeau, who was very disappointing in complete lack of anger, and desperation to restore alliance. Canada can only restore alliance by breaking it off in face of declaration of war.
