In South Korea you have the freedom to work 60 hours, but In North Korea, all jobs are banned except for dusting the Kim Jong-un portrait. If you are found doing anything else, you will be executed for 12 generations. yeonmi-park

I think a lot of them also don’t really understand how the government works, and their conception of what “Democracy” means is so deeply enmeshed in the American Civil Religion that they’re dealing with more of a religious article of faith than an actual political system grounded in the real world.

Of course it is, that’s how “Democracy” has always worked. In what meaningful way has the US ever promoted Democracy? Yet every single military action abroad is justified by saying we’re defending Democracy. It’s not an actual thing, just a signifier (and practically speaking, democratic countries = countries that bend the knee to US hegemony).

I doubt most of them knew Ukraine existed in any real sense. All I knew about Ukraine when things started to heat up is that it used to be part of the USSR and there was a revolution there in '14.

I told them that what they called Western hegemony is different from the rules based order. They said the rules based order is Western hegemony. And I said I agreed. That is what I am saying. Real Western hegemony is a rules based order. And they said yes, that is what we are trying to get rid of. And I said no, but we don’t even have that right now. We need more Western hegemony. And everyone at the same time was like “nooo” we are socialists, we are against Western hegemony. Socialists oppose Western hegemony. And I said but not social democrats. Social democrats are the socialists who support NATO.

And I saw someone accuse my post of strawmanning.

      the rules based order.

Does the US actually have some set of bylaws or something that dictate how everyone has to do what they say? I’ve never been clear if there actually are “rules” or if that’s just something they say.

No. It’s a Havana-funded Cuban disinformation bot farm instance.

Russia is an existential threat to the US and we have to draw a line somewhere.

Russia hasn’t done anything to me. China hasn’t done anything to me (in the present day). In fact, China is constantly calling for the U.S. to stop war mongering and just do business, but the US can’t help it but keep inching closer to their airspace and play chicken.

The U.S. is an existential threat to MY HEALTH, because I’m not likely to be shot or run over by a Russian or Chinese soldier. I am, however, likely to be shot or run over by an American next door. So fuck off with Russia and China and fix the problems here first, then come back and ask me to join your dumb wars. The answer will be no anyway.

This is domino theory. It doesn’t look good on paper, and it has lead to incredible amounts of war and death and destruction in the real world, including WW1. Many also argued that domino theory would lead to a bunch of democracies in the middle east after a democratic utopia was created in Iraq. No real world application for domino theory has been found.

Torturing innocent people isn’t a tone. Eugenics isn’t a tone. Collective punishment isn’t a tone. Figure your shit out.

It’s such a perfect line because it reveals their total neoliberalization, the entire monstrous, bloody affair of war is justified by a potential Return on Investment.

If Ukraine isn’t open to Western investors then maybe Taiwan won’t be either. Then South Korea. Then Poland. How will my boss’s boss make a steady 15% on his capital if that happens?

This is an investment in democracy.
