the amount of work that goes into even a simple game is so staggering, you could almost call the finished product a hyperobject

ages ago, I had to write a game of minesweaper for a class. When I finished, hours latter, and saw the terminal type out the symbols of the game board correctly, it struck me that I was treading water on the surface of an ocean who’s depths suddenly became very, very intimidating. I became aware of what I don’t know. I am floored by the art people have constructed with these machines. The sheer volume of labor and expertise is… nearly unthinkable. And it’s tragic the conditions all that human effort is squeezed through, just to make a spreadsheet in an Nth floor office spit out a big enough number.

  • so, as a weird consequence of these kinda threads, all I know about romani and travelers is the “anecdotes” of europeans insisting they’re not racist, while saying exactly the sort of thing people say after they’ve insisted their not racist. Are there any books or resources that give a better understanding? It’s just kinda culture-shock to me that there are still people living nomadic (is that the right term?) lives on the other side of the Atlantic, when over here… well. I’d like to know more. How do modern cities and states accommodate them? And, more realistically it seems, how do cites and states fail to accommodate them?
