I’m not talking about you, dear fedizens Fedizens are built differently :p

normie social media; fb, instagram, linkedin etc

I mean business in a loose sense of the word, but not always to generate a profit.

Ex personal branding - marketting yourself a defacto product. Ex; linkedin as a whole. Instagram/fb being the pinnacles of a persons existence, being fundamentally ‘look at how cool i am’.

I’m not counting IM messenger programs like discord or matrix or sms as social medias or phone apps like the 1900s era telephone. Obv i message/call my mom a lot. Pseudo/Anonymous social medias like reddit/4chan etc are also different that say facebook, and i’m not talking about them either.

I’ve noticed that when trying to use social media for networking irl, it’s god awful for that. But when i’m using it for business/marketing, it goes better.

I mean, at this point, yah kinda? It’s part of why it’s all so boring nowadays. You’re not supposed to use these sites for entertainment or unwinding anymore. You’re meant to use them to curate a “brand”, as that is part and parcel of how you advance yourself in the capitalist nightmare.

in a post capitalist world, i think people would still promote themselves due to traits like narcissism or more mundanely, just liking attention. But yes, there wouldn’t be nearly as much brand promotion since that wouldnt really generate more revenue.

And there would be less self promotion, cause things like; most of the onlyfans ladies wont be doing that anymore.

I think there is a difference between wanting attention because you like attention and the kind of businesslike image cultivation we see on platforms like facebook.

Way back in the day in an obscure MyBB webforum for Brazilian nerds with 800 users, I was very proud of, as we called it in those times, my e-peen, which is to say, being one of the most well-liked members of the community with lots of in-forum awards listed on my user profile and shit. But like. At no point did I think of myself as cultivating a brand that could (and would) be used to get me employment, and at no point did other people side-eye me for doing “out of brand” or “unprofessional” things, which does happen in places like Facebook.

To be fair it’s the same under socialism. How other people see you in society would matter nonetheless, perhaps regardless of economic system altogether.

As I told the other person – I do think people would care enough to want social attention, but I highly doubt that in a non-capitalist society we’d be cultivating this highly curated worksona who is always in a good mood, never tired, and loves being exploited, yanno?

Oh no, there will definitely be work in socialism and how your coworkers and bosses view you could definitely have a positive or negative impact on your career. It’s not just a matter of wanting social attention, but in socialism and communism it’s going to be even more about what others think of you than before. You’ll need to present yourself as a model citizen/worker if you want promotions and opportunities and stuff, that is if you don’t have money and the people in charge of that aren’t taking bribes, which they probably are.

I’m guessing you don’t spend a lot of time on these platforms or interacting with people who don’t share your views?

I know a lot of very normal people who I keep in touch with via instagram, snapchat, etc. (I’m on Facebook but I only really check it occasionally because my Mom is on it) Most people aren’t using those to show off ‘look at how cool I am’, more like, here’s what I’m doing right now. Unless someone is attempting to get thousands of followers so they can monetize what they do, it’s generally just targeted towards some kind of hobby or interest they have, some general trends like taking pictures of the food you got if it’s plated well, or venting about problems.

There’s a decent amount of platforms which are social media adjacent which facilitate chatting like facebook/IG messenger, discord, etc. where it’s a bit more obvious it’s just about keeping up the smaller online social circles that you participate in or targeted small communities.

Linkedin is absolutely just for business though, no argument there.

I find those media are either for people promoting themselves (e.g. Instagram) or companies making profit out of social interaction (e.g. WhatsApp). Whatever, it’s all business, so I mostly agree.

Mostly, selling social structure data (who you’re talking with, etc.). I believe they also do some other sort of business with some clients.

There are two main types of social media: entity/individual focused, and community focused. The former is increasingly marketed, and really mostly useful for market/capital, influence/manipulation, networking reasons. Since the Reddit redesign, Reddit is becoming just like the former type.
