I’m sorry, but Tasha was a terrible actress. No, I do not wish this in the slightest.
I don’t think she was a bad actress, but she was “cluttering up” the bridge. Worf was always a far more interesting character and, once she was gone, Worf got to shine brighter.
Worf didn’t even have an interesting backstory in the first season. He was just the Klingon in the crew and was sometimes kind of stuffy. Tasha’s backstory of being from the rape planet was incredibly cringe, though, and they didn’t spend any of her nearly two dozen episodes fleshing her out beyond that while Worf spent the first season accumulating minor quirks.
Tasha was a security officer so it makes sense that she isn’t a great actress. Look at Riker and his middling trombone abilities as another example of Starfleet “excellency”.
It’s difficult to practice trombone enough to get good when banging everything in sight.

I mean, he’s an XO on the lead ship, I wouldn’t expect his musical abilities to be fantastic.
In that kind of environment, you plays with whos you can get. What matters more is willingness to commit, despite being middling and not having lots of time free. I’d expect that band to have rotating members on any given week based on who’s free.
Its not like they have the Starfleet Orchestra on board, just like professional military bands don’t generally go cruising on a warship - that’s mot their MOS.
Keep in mind the writers could’ve written him as a virtuoso (they could’ve dubbed a pro playing), but that would change the character and environment. It seems we’re supposed to see him as a “middling” player, who just enjoys it to the best of his ability, and was never going to be a pro.
And to quote others - practice time would interfere with his bangin’ time. A man’s gotta choose.
