Today I was, finally, allowed into the closed beta of Kagi.

Here is a screenshot of the email that I received from the developer this morning:

Here’s a screenshot of the search results for ‘lemmy fediverse’:

As far as I can tell, there are no ads nor tracking. There is a lot that I do not know since I just started using it a little bit today.

That information is in the screenshot of the email:

Kagi will come as a free version with limited use; and an unlimited use, paid option at $10 a month, both versions having great search results with less spam and completely ad-free, tracking free, and with none of your search data being retained.

My bad, I missed it on accident by skimming through the Email. But I wonder what “limited use” means. Will certain functions (e.g. instant answers similar to DDG) be restricted? Or will themes be locked behind the paywall?

This really interests me since I’m always on the lookout for a good search engine to become my new daily driver. Though I doubt that Kagi will be FOSS which turns me a bit off tbh.

feels like the effort to reinvent/make the next big search engine has been pretty unsuccessful so far, because this is the fourth or fifth alternative search engine i’ve heard of (among those there’s YOU and Neeva) just in the past two years and they all kind of blend together so far, not least because they all seem to be built on the premise of privacy but seem to have varying commitments to that goal.
