VLC 3.0.18 Is Out with RISC-V Support, DVBSub Support Inside MKV, SMBv2 Improvements - 9to5Linux
VLC 3.0.18 open-source, free, and cross-platform media player is now available for download with RISC-V support and many enhancements.

What exactly does it mean for a desktop application to support a processor architecture? Refrain from writing inline assembly?

When VLC uses thethe graphics processor, this accelerates decoding of video streams. So it can use the graphics card to make smoother video. Inline assembly also ties back into speed as inline assembly will make things run more efficiently as well.

@Tiuku @shreddy_scientist It looks like earlier this year there were a bunch of commits that worked on making the build system aware of RISC-V https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/commits/master?search=risc-v
