This may apply in theory, but the truth is that these corporations have grown in power - beyond what a regular private organization can do. Facebook is the new default forum on which society communicates, they, in practice, control so much of what we see and say. We can’t keep treating them like they’re the local butcher shop down the road. They are integral institutions in our civilization now. They need to be held accountable when they deny people their rights.

FB has made a statement to a journalist (sorry, I wasn’t able to find anything other than the journalist’s twitter)

There seem to be some push back questioning the honesty of Signal and this HN thread seems to agree with it.

I personally think that Signal doesn’t have any reason to lie. The ads are explicitly against facebook advertising policies that “prohibits ads that assert that you have a specific medical condition or sexual orientation”, so its not like it would be hard for them to actually get the ads banned.

i feel like they could have milked this more.
for example: your newly wed pilates instructor.
you likely have x fear and y insecurities and many other interpolated details based on information we know about people in your demographic with the same personality and other matching characteristics.
this will be remembered for many years and at z crucial moment we will influence you and you and other targeted individuals to make a decision in our favor.
