Lorne Thurston and Joseph McIntyre were planning to get an up-close look at the Wayne Gretzky statue in downtown Edmonton on Friday, when they realized it had been smeared with what appeared to be – and strongly smelled like – feces.

“Disappointing,” he said. “It shouldn’t have been done.”

The pair were part of a group of friends who stopped to watch as an employee walked out of Rogers Place and wiped Gretzky’s face with a towel doused in cleaning product.

“Why would someone want to do that?” said Taylor, standing with the group of friends at the statue.

“[The statue] might not mean much to some people, but it means something to other people.”

That’s the point.

The coverage of Gretzky’s fall should be a lesson on manipulation by the media.

Latest articles on the Gretzky controversy mention his lack of team colours, giving the US team a thumbs up, Bobby Orr’s letter and Trumps tweet - it paints a picture of patriotic hockey fans over-reacting to otherwise benign coincidences. Gretzky was supporting fellow players, not wearing the colours was bullshit but not shit-in-face worthy, Trump is an idiot. Easy to doubt his connections based on that information.

Some articles mention his wife was at a Trump’s Inauguration. His wife. They were both at the inauguration and they both attended a party at mar-o-lago. They’ve been publicly supportive of Trump and yet most articles portray upset Canadians as taciturn fans, not mentioning the real link between Gretzky and Trump.
