    Explanation: Mount Vesuvius in Italy is an active volcano. The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was built nearby. Sadly, when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it did so with such suddenness and force that many in the town were killed going about their daily business, eventually burying the entire town beneath a layer of ash, never to be resettled.

    On the upside, some 2000 years later, we’ve gotten some incredible archeological finds from this!

      The part that blew my mind was seeing the ~5 meter tall column of ash and debris that fell on Pompeii in a nearby museum. There was a time stamp on each layer and the whole column fell over a ~1 day period. It wasn’t until that moment that the reality of the situation clarified in my mind, and made me imagine experiencing that.
