Carney, 59, kicked off his campaign to take the reins of the governing party at the Edmonton-area hockey rink where he learned to skate as a boy while growing up on the Prairies.
“I’m doing this because Canada is the best country in the world, but it still could be even better,” Carney said.
The Harvard-educated Carney said he has the economic bona fides needed to steer Canada through a period of uncertainty as the country stares down president-elect Donald Trump and the threat of punishing tariffs on all our goods.
Carney said Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is the “worst possible” choice to put on the other side of the negotiating table with Trump.
An election where Carney roasts Pollievre on his tenure as finance critic is perfect.
I have only voted Liberal once and that was to get Harper out of the way.
But Carney would be my choice next election (if he makes it in as leader).
Register to vote in the leadership election if you want him to be the leader to against PP. I’m waiting to hear what the other candidates would have to say but I’m definitely voting in this one and every leadership election of every party that’ll allow me to vote. No more bullshit like letting NDP elect Jagmeet instead of Charlie Angus or CPC elect PP.
Thanks for the info. Went looking for more data and found this hellishness instead.

“Unlike Australia and the United Kingdom, Canada does not criminalize interfering in nominations, leadership races, or any other political party process,” the report said.
The report said foreign actors have tried to target leadership races in the past, and “allegedly interfered in the leadership races of the Conservative Party of Canada.”
(Dennis Molinaro, a professor at Ontario Tech University and former security analyst with the government of Canada), said the Liberal Party’s mechanism to elect a leader was “terrible” since it left the door open for foreign agents who might try to influence the leadership race with the least resistance.
Things are moving fast. They tightened it up a couple of days after this article. Currently it’s 14+, citizen or PR and registered by Jan 27th. Here’s the reg page. You don’t have to give them money. I don’t think they can check if you’re another party member. If I was worried about that, and was a member of say the NDP, I’d cancel my existing membership, register, vote, then cancel and reregister with NDP.
I registered with Alberta NDP last year, does that affiliate me with the federal NDP at all?
Good Q. I wouldn’t think so but could be wrong.
Sweet. Thanks again. :)
The question is does he support mixed member proportional representation or he is going to be a typical rich guy trying to keep everyone else down.
Has he ever said anything on that? I can’t find anything obvious. I’m guessing he’s not gonna broach the subject unless he’s ready to actually execute. I don’t think he’ll say anything about it during the campaign as it’ll trigger people’s 2015 election reform grief.
Carney only connects with millionaires. He has never been concerned about paying bills. If you think the cost of food and rent is too high, Carney can’t understand you or relate to you. He wants to raises all taxes for living in Canada. Similiar to how Trudeau has never paid a bill in his entire life.
None of the politicians live lives that are relatable to me. But at least Carney is intelligent and competent, unlike PP and Singh
On a personal level this is likely true. However he said that the average Canadian pays more taxes than they should and that wages are lower than they should be. Both of those statements go against that. What would the concrete policy would be? We don’t know yet. He’s yet to unveil anything specific. Would he follow through on anything he proposes? Won’t know unless we elect him a PM and see. I’m skeptical, but I’m triply so of PP.
Carney has been guiding Trudeau for a minimum of 2 years. Carney helped bring in the carbon tax, which is going up in April, that Freeland implemented. Come April 1st, your money will be worth less as the cost of life in Canada goes up, again, all guided by Carney.
If he advised fiscal response to COVID, then he did incredibly well in my view. Everyone I know who lost their jobs survived on CERB, didn’t lose their homes and returned to work once they were able to, often to their previous jobs since many businesses were able to survive without work too. Something that in any previous crisis management scenario from the 20th/21st century would have resulted in massive unemployment, business die off, evictions and so on. You know, give money to the banks and wait for it to trickle down. I don’t know if Carney had a hand in this but if he did, hats off.
The inflation response wasn’t so great but that was our friend Tiff Macklem through and through. The fact that most governments fight inflation with interest rates alone is stupid. The fact that we don’t empower labour to get wages to catch up afterwards is worse. Had Carney anything to do with the rail and postal strikes breakups? I don’t know. I’m waiting to hear more from him on labour and wages.
The carbon tax is an insignificant contributor to prices but either way he’s already said he’s gonna kill it. So has Freeland. The carbon tax is almost certainly dead under any future LPC gov. PP made sure of it.
Got proof?
'Cause when Carney was in charge of the BoC during the 2008-09 meltdown Canada didn’t do so bad. Zero banks went under and hundreds of thousands of people didn’t lose their homes.
That was due to legislation that was already in affect, such as the banks are required by law to have a higher amount of cash on hand than American banks. The Bank of Canada can’t make legislation or pass regulations, so Carney had zero to do with banks not going under.
Quick search says this is likely true. I can’t see him having worked at the OSFI. He has worked for the two finance ministers in the years prior to the 2008 meltdown. The OSFI reports to those ministers, but I don’t know if Carney would have had anything to do with regulation OSFI sets on the banks.
