Sony’s been fucked since 2005. The console war is over and nobody told them. Developers want to sell games to customers - and platforms are an obstacle.
Nintendo doesn’t care because they want “blue ocean” gimmicks with no competition. So: motion, tablet, handheld. Microsoft actively encourages the shift because they expect they’ll be The Only Platform, despite Steam selling so many Windows games that Windows is optional. Meanwhile - Sony has clung to exclusives because that’s what made the PSX and PS2 super duper successful and they do not have a Plan B.
They keep winning each generation, as if the blue AMD laptop is meaningfully different from the green one. The libraries are 90% identical. They keep having “no games” in the sense they have no games to lord over the other kids on the playground, when their core demographic is 30. This is how disruption always works: fantastic margins on dwindling control. Whatever you have is more profitable than what you don’t! Until suddenly you have nothing.
The economic case for bribing studios into a single platform is doomed. Has been ever since GTA 3. Really, ever since RenderWare made a generation of PC / PS2 / Xbox / GameCube titles look identical, until EA bought that company and destroyed them. Now every machine is powerful enough, to the point the last-gen PS4 is still relevant alongside the endgame PS5 Pro. Crossplay is the default, because fuck you, of course everyone who bought the same game can play each other. The writing is so clearly on the wall that Microsoft may not bother with another proper Xbox. Does anything think that’s because they’re losing money? Even the studios they delete are profitable. They are fucking around on a level above the 1990s cosplay that Sony desperately wants to maintain.
I bought the pre order for the Steam version just a day ago at a 30% discount. So they better be on multiple platforms!
You’re mistaken if you think this means simultaneous PC release. Spencer was travelling around during TGS offering wads of money to whoever wanted to take it, this just means FF will prolly end up on Xbox for a non insignificant lump sum while PC will be left to boost the game’s sale tail like with XV.
I think if they want to sell lots of copies, they should make a good FF. XIII was trash, XV was meh, XVI was a step in the right direction but the combat is utter trash and the remakes pushed too far. They divided the remake into a trilogy to jam their hands deep into the fans’ pockets and are being punished for it. I highly doubt the majority of FF fans is not already on PlayStation. Shit, I’ve bought and played every single FF since FFI and the last three really made the series sour on me. I’m replaying FFXII because VI, despite having a really interesting story and setting, seems to have been designed for Americans. Action and dumbed down mechanics, no strategy, no maths, no materia or spell combo, no massive skill trees… Make FF good for people with above room temp IQ again and watch the sales soar.

I remember when the FF7 remake came out— i’m confused about the subsequent remake versions that came out after it? Not mad or anything— i just don’t have context abt it is all. Is there more content? Expanded storylines?
Super excited to see Crisis Core get remastered tho. Lots of fond memories!
The remake series has always been planned as a trilogy, and the first game in the series released on everything. But the very next game was made exclusive to PlayStation. This was, apparently, by design. The idea was to bring a bunch of players into the series, then switch to an exclusive to try and help push PS5’s.
As someone who got the first game on PC, I feel this was a stupid move. I’m not going to get the subsequent games on a different platform. Your save carries through the games; I want the next one on the platform I already played the first one on.

I have fond memories of watching my older brother play through the OG on his PC when I was a tween. Still can’t get the chocobo theme out of my head!

It’s a trilogy, remake was part 1 focused on the Midgar part at the beginning, rebirth is part 2 and goes to the end of OG disk 1, part 3 is expected probably in 2027. Crisis Core Reunion is already out.

The story is expanded quite a bit, incorporating things from the Final Fantasy 7 side games, and, without getting too spoilery, there are changes to the story that are noticed in-universe.
