We’re getting scapegoated for the DDOS attack that affected us too yesterday, all because @[email protected] made one (admittedly kinda funny) joke here.

Normally I wouldn’t post petty internet bullshit like this but I thought our admins should know.

Edit: Entire thread is a gold mine for dunk tank material tho

Edit2: Now the Spook of @[email protected] is getting namedropped

Edit3: So after some digging (read: 5 mins browsing lemmy instances) another user made this post saying the attacker was someone with a personal beef with .world completely unrelated to us? Documented methodology of attack is different but similar to the spam bot we got hit with too, but idk I’m just amateur hour here not an OpSec pro.

Edit4: I was trying to click on the links provided in that post to double check but lemmy.world went down data-laughing

Edit5: Official Statement

So who is attacking us? One thing that is clear is that those responsible of these attacks know the ins and outs of Lemmy. They know which database requests are the most taxing and they are always quick to find another as soon as we close one off. That’s one of the only things we know for sure about our attackers. Being the biggest instance and having defederated with a couple of instances has made us a target.

Damn, I never knew what it was like to live somewhere rent-free until now

I felt this kind of discussion is disingenious. Even if it was because of a defederation, the actions of a few users shouldn’t be taken as approval for those actions on behalf of the entire instance.

As disorganized as we are, the general consensus is that we literally do not care that they de federated from us. Most of us think it is funny that they fear us that much. Hell, there is still a vocal contingent that thinks that federating at all was a mistake.

As well, pretty much the only instance that wasn’t DDoSed was lemmygrad, but also, it doesn’t really matter? This kinda stuff just happens sometimes when activity picks up and people go a little crazy? Trying to witch-hunt over this stuff is a sign of internet noobage, this kind of shit just happens for any and no reason and will likely continue to happen for any and no reason. Hopefully not too much, as I enjoy wasting my time here, but it really doesn’t matter.

Eh, I think it’s pretty obnoxious and annoying, especially when there is zero reason for doing so. They defederated based on their own red-scare anxiety and nothing else, then unfairly maligned us to try to justify it.

That’s really it. They could have blocked us and said something like “we don’t want our feeds to be full of low effort shitposts.” It’s the fucking lies that make them giant douchebags. Then you get the fucking Reddit nerds playing lawyerball who claim we brigaded that thread to push back against the lies, when even according to the rules on Reddit, communities are allowed to participate in threads about them.

That is true, but it is quite funny to assume all ferral cats and owls of hexbear are that organized. However what you worked out there is the structural antisemitic character of that linked user’s thought.
