Yet another community to discuss shows and movies

Standard don’t be a troll moderation policy

Happy to have any discussion there.

I don’t think another community splits the user base. Lemmy is fairly small, everyone can see posts in their all feed. People will engage with the discussions they like. Quite frankly I engage in discussions without even realizing what community they’re in.

Thank you for creating the community!

I guess in my case I’ll probably mostly post about television on there, as [email protected] and [email protected] are already quite established, but it’s nice to finally have an alternative to [email protected]

To @[email protected], there is indeed a lot of communities, but it comes from

Of course it splits the user base. If we are going to have one new community created every week, we might as well just use Mastodon and post things based on hashtags.

To me the big functional difference is a discussion is centralized on Lemmy, very findable not just with hashtags. And there is a core moderation for the entire discussion.

Think of the paradox of choice: the more spread around the discussions are, the harder it becomes for other people to start participating.

Please consider just contributing to any of the existing communities.

Paradox of choice is an issue, but (and I know you are aware) centralization of communities on LW is an issue too.

It’s even more frustrating when you see that LW mods are spread too thin and cannot moderate every community hosted on their instance, but still refuse to close them down when they realize there are no active mods: https://lemm.ee/post/33851691

It might help to advertise this one more if it’s intended to be the new replacement. I’m happy to start posting on a new one

Also maybe a list of the movie/TV related communities and why people prefer each one

What’s the right way to advertise a community?

My general plan is posted here, a couple people from the major instances will subscribe, and then post a bunch of content in the community, that people will engage with. So the current umbrella academy discussion is fairly fruitful.

After that, I have strong opinions I want to share on space above and beyond

What’s the right way to advertise a community?

Posting here, and then in the weekly thread in the coming weeks seems reasonable. We can also post to [email protected], but maybe you could change the displayed name of the community to “Shows and Media discussions”, so that people understand that movies will stay on [email protected] ?
