    Of course it splits the user base. If we are going to have one new community created every week, we might as well just use Mastodon and post things based on hashtags.

      To me the big functional difference is a discussion is centralized on Lemmy, very findable not just with hashtags. And there is a core moderation for the entire discussion.

        Think of the paradox of choice: the more spread around the discussions are, the harder it becomes for other people to start participating.

        Please consider just contributing to any of the existing communities.

          Paradox of choice is an issue, but (and I know you are aware) centralization of communities on LW is an issue too.

          It’s even more frustrating when you see that LW mods are spread too thin and cannot moderate every community hosted on their instance, but still refuse to close them down when they realize there are no active mods: https://lemm.ee/post/33851691
