My brainstorming
My initial tentative arrangement was this:
After the first three guesses missed, I tried rearranging into this:
But it’s a swing and a miss. Never even got close to blue or purple (as you can maybe see, I thought blue was “stuff in a bathroom/laundry”), and both yellow and green had too many confounders.

categories to be weird. I tried to eliminate the ones that wouldn’t work to try and narrow down what was left over. I didn’t see the last category coming at all

They really had “bits of hardware” not include bolt, AND “fishing gear” not include rod?
I got none of them. I think I got three "one away"s in my attempts.
Yeah I failed too for the same reasons. I figured out all the categories but kept messing up one piece.
Wait you had figured out all four categories? There should only be one way that all 16 words can be arranged into 4 categories.
Yeah having confounders like that is a very common deliberate part of the design of this game. Yesterday was especially difficult because of just how many confounders there were and how much cross-over there was with them.
