The construction workers who went missing in the Baltimore bridge collapse came to the Maryland area from Mexico or Central America, including an enterprising Honduran father and husband who started a delivery business before the pandemic forced him to find other work, according to his family.
Police managed to close bridge traffic seconds before a cargo ship slammed into one of the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s supports early Tuesday, causing the span to fall into the frigid Patapsco River. There wasn’t time for a maintenance crew filling potholes on the span to get to safety.
The tragedy illustrated the contributions that migrants make to the U.S. economy, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said.
“This demonstrates that migrants go out and do risky jobs at midnight. And for this reason, they do not deserve to be treated as they are by certain insensitive, irresponsible politicians in the United States,” he said.

They were being expolited and no gave a shit to warn them. Didn’t even try. If police was able to arrive in time to close bridge then there was time to warn the workers and get them off. I call bullshit on it all.
Because it’s safer to do road work when there are fewer cars on the road, I presume. There wasn’t much time from the mayday call to the collapse, so I’ll wait to hear more from the investigators before I weigh in on what safety faults there were
“I need one of you guys on the south side, one of you guys on the north side, hold all traffic on the Key Bridge — there is a ship approaching that has lost its steering. So until you get that under control, we got to stop all traffic,” one officer says on the dispatch.
The same officer then asks: “Is there a crew working on the bridge right now?”
He continues: “I’m not sure where, there’s a crew up there you might want to notify, whoever the foreman is, see if we can get them off the bridge temporarily.”
Another officer replies to say that once another police unit arrives, “I’ll go grab the workers on the Key Bridge.”
Moments later another officer says over the radio: “The whole bridge just fell down! Start, start … everybody. The whole thing just collapsed.”
The power loss on the ship happened about two minutes before the collision. The pilots managed to assess the situation, send a mayday, request that the bridge be closed, police dispatch contacted the police, the police closed the bridge, and traffic managed to clear it.
The police didn’t have time to go out and grab the crew. Frankly, if the cop who announced that he was going for them as soon as the next cop arrived had just gone, he probably wouldn’t have even made it far enough to go down with them.
I think that the police and the pilots did a pretty impressive job with the extremely limited time they had.

The road closure was probably frantic and last minute. Nobody wanted these people to die. Stop looking for conspiracy in every tragedy
