The second Winnipeg general strike happened in 1927. Salisbury House introduced sandwiches shaped like boobs and called them “nips”. The moral panic and rioting was short lived and largely forgotten after Sal’s agreed to remove the gumdrop nipples from the hamburger buns, however the name “nips” still remains. The newspaper coverage was considered too pornographic to retain, so it was covered up.

Did you know, the Panama canal was built in the 1920s to destroy Winnipeg. In 1950, Panama successfully flooded the city. Manitoba retaliated by building the Floodway as a means to flood Panama. The war continues, very slowly.

I was hoping for one about the Panama canal. I like this one.

Winnipeg was named after the children’s book character, Winnie the Pooh. One of the first Scottish immigrants found a page from that book while visiting Chief Peguis, and created the name Winnipeg as a portmanteau.

In 2023, @smorks made Troy the mayor of Winnipeg, for reasons unknown. After a brief stint trying to fix potholes, Troy then went on a power mad rampage, culminating in his use of city resources to create a giant mechanical monster modelled after Destoroyah (Godzilla 1995). In the smoking ruins of Winnipeg, he was eventually interviewed. “One way to solve complaints about potholes – remove the complainers!”

I’ll start: Did you know, Louis Riel was the lead singer for the famous Winnipeg band, The Guess Who? He is the only Winnipeg musician to get a holiday named after them.
