I used to use MyFitnessPal but its pop up ads are particularly annoying and paying $20 for an ad free version doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
I use Loseit, after having left MyFitnessPal with similar complaints. They will do popup ads pretty to advertise their premium version, but it’s better overall.
Sadly they’re kind of going the same way, and are currently even hiding the barcode scanner behind a paywall in some regions.
I have a pretty consistent stack of go-to meals already programmed in, so I’m sticking with it for now. But also keeping an eye out for a better solution
the barcode scanner is what made me leave MyFitnessPal Years ago I wont stand for something that was once free now you have to pay for strategy.
looking to try this out but install for some reason
Waistline is a FOSS app, I only discovered myself a few days ago on Lemmy. I like it so far.
https://github.com/davidhealey/waistline
It’s available in fdroid and Google play stores.
I used that for a bit and I recall it was a little obtuse to just put in the number of calories you had for a meal. Instead, it’s almost like it expected you to create a recipe for every meal you cooked with the exact ingredients and stuff.
Did they ever fix that, or is there an easy work around?
I use chronometer. I got premium so I don’t remember the ads, but I remember them not bothering me much.
Cronometer + Netguard is quite tolerable
Using chronometer with a pihole.
No ads, necessary functionality not locked behind a paywall like fatsecret or myfitnesspal
I have been using MyNetDiary for a long time now. It scans barcodes and everthing that I used MyFitnessPal for years ago but wanted the option for scanning. I see no ads they do have a “premium” mode though that does more in depth things. can not complain.
I second this!! Not FOSS but still does everything I need it to, and that barcode scanner is such a time saver that I couldn’t live without.
Aha I’ll give it a look. Myfitnessfal is getting out of hand.
Macrofactor is what I have been using for a few years, love it.
It is paid but they offer a free trial. No ads, no pop-ups, no notifications. Just a clean and fast user experience
Does it support barcode scanning?
Yes, it does. I’ve used macrofactor for a while now and the app is great.
They have barcode scanning, as well a nutrition label scanning for things that aren’t in their database.
you might try one of the FOSS communities, or fdroid/android apps communities, or apple apps (dont know about any of them). They have had great suggestions for me in the past, and this seems like exactly the sort of thing FOSS is perfect for. Just in case loseit doesn’t work for you.
I use lifesum, although its a pirated app from mobilism so not sure what the base app is like
