  • Something not many people have mentioned… What country do you live in?

I was planning on trying to get diagnosed, but then RFK “Brainworm” Jr. announced his little “autism registry” plan. He went back on that, but it still has made me far more weary about being diagnosed as an adult. I have also heard, although this is purely conjecture and may be wrong, that having an autism diagnosis can make it harder to migrate to another country if shit hits the fan.

However, for your kid, I do think there are benefits that outweigh the downsides. I have also been diagnosed with ADHD since I was a teenager, and it allowed me to get academic accommodations in college that were pretty invaluable. I can imagine they would have had an even bigger impact as a kid in school.

  • It seems like the Imgur album only has a photo of the back of the board. I think HVS004 might be the wrong number, can you take a close up photo of the chip (and surrounding circuitry) with a flash for a clearer view?

It’s also weird that a bug could have fried itself across a chip that only runs off a few volts. “Bug zappers” usually use at least a few kV. Maybe that IC runs off the 33v line or it was a particularly wet bug, but I suspect that might not be your issue.

  • I’m sure you’ll be able to figure it out! My best friend was in a very similar boat as you last year, had all the symptoms but their GP referred them to a crappy assessor who took the word of their parents over their own symptoms. They were told they “probably just have anxiety”. They were able to find an NP who diagnosed them, and now sees a psychiatrist regularly for med updates.

This was in the USA, which has the absolute most broken medical system in the world, so if they could figure it out I’m positive you can too :)

  • The whole idea of a “family informant” is so absolutely bogus and outdated. Why would YOU getting a diagnosis be dependent on what some other non-medical professional says? It’s an utterly broken system.

I don’t know what country you’re in, but try and find a nurse practitioner who specializes in ADHD. Use Google and other “find a doctor” search tools. They can diagnose you using a more updated criteria that DOESN’T involve your family.

  • It shouldn’t cause issues, since the water will remain in the heater without any pressure to push it out, there’s no difference between leaving it sitting with the valve open or closed.

Now, draining the tank could actually cause problems… But there’s not any reason for you to do that for what you’re trying to accomplish.

  • You should really try a medication again. There are ones that don’t affect your appetite as bad, and if you literally cannot hold down a job without some sort of external help, your childhood doctor’s “medz bad” opinion is no longer valid. See someone who specializes in treating ADHD/autism and get their opinion. Finding the right meds can really be a life changer, it will probably take trying a few different ones, but it’s worth it. I would not be able to handle adult life without mine.

In the meantime, it seems like all the jobs (apart from food) that you’ve struggled with have been customer-facing jobs. My first job was also customer-facing and I hated it. I’m lucky enough to have a college education in a field that lets me work from home, but that isn’t an option for everyone. Have you thought about maybe going into a trade? Construction? Electrician? Carpentry? I’m assuming you don’t have a degree in a specific field since you didn’t mention it, but those jobs tend to have less social interaction (and what social interaction there is is much less consequential if you mess something up)

Finally, I just want to say, you’re not lazy. You’re obviously trying incredibly hard, because if you were just lazy, you would have given up by now. Having a kid to care for at 24 while also struggling with, frankly, a crippling disability sounds so fucking difficult. Hang in there, man. You’ll figure it out, one way or another, I’m sure of it.

  • Here’s the thing. We actually have NO idea what to look for. Our sample size of “planets that have life” is exactly one, which doesn’t really tell us much. Since we know that an Earth-like planet can support life, it makes sense to start our search there, but there’s no reason to believe that extraterrestrial life might not be completely and utterly different from anything on our little rock.

That being said, liquid water is extremely conducive to complex chemical reactions, which are probably required for complex life. But you also need chemicals that are both reactive enough to do things, but can be stable enough to not randomly break apart. This is one of the reasons carbon is so good at being alive, it’s reactive enough to bond with a lot of other elements (including itself), but not too reactive to be useful.

So basically, this isn’t new. It’s just pointing out that a pure “water world” might not be very useful without a bunch of lively chemicals to boot.

  • Using WiFi signal disturbances to track people might not be super accurate, but damn that’s a cool trick. Although, also a good proof of concept for how bad actors could use nothing but control over a WiFi-capable device to spy on you, which is a bit concerning…

Anyway, before learning about this, I ended up using an ESPHome BLE beacon component along with the Home Assistant app. You can configure the transmission strength in the app, so by setting it to “low” or “very low”, the ESP32 only picks it up when my phone is in the same room. It has worked a lot more reliably than some other stuff I tried.
