Interesting story. I wonder what would have happened if Nortel produced the phones in Canada.

In that era, someone else in the telecoms business would have gone to China for production to compete with Nortel.

Results likely wouldn’t have been all that different.

Nortel wasn’t killed by Huawei stealing their IP, which certainly did happen. They tanked themselves with some terrible accounting that hid the terrible situation they put themselves in. Nortel and Enron are the reason GAAP is the gold standard and legally required to be reported these days.

Hmm; I wish the mods told me why they removed my comment so I don’t do it again.

Apparently, its only okay to make spyware when its made by a US or European company

EDIT: Just want to point out that that’s not what OP said, it’s just a trend I often see around the Lemmy community

Spying for profit and spying for political reasons are two very different concerns.

Most major tech companies are the former, Chinese companies are all the latter.

I’m sure most American tech companies also spy for the government, we just don’t hear about it until we do.

For the government and for political reasons aren’t the same either.

China is using the data to control populations including those in other countries, the US government is using this information to go after individuals.

Oh, so like US tech companies, namely social media platforms and increasingly “news” outlets?

We can’t escape that most companies that handle, collect, and display data, no matter where they are from, are probably doing evil things with that data.

Not trying to downplay the horrible crap that Chinese companies and their government does, but it really does happen outside of China all the time.

There’s still a difference between facebook pushing propaganda and the US government controlling facebook to push propaganda.
