Closures of local Canadian newsrooms in 2023 have left municipal governments, non-profits and journalists themselves trying to figure out what’s next.
Local news? … I live near Sudbury so I often log onto the Sudbury Star website because I seldom get the newspaper … compare the website for the Sudbury Star, North Bay Nugget, Timmins Press, Kirkland Lake Northern News and you often can’t tell them apart … even the newspapers are no different as they only provide one or two pages of local news and then print six pages of the same advertising crap, national stories and entertainment news and everyone else.
It almost doesn’t matter if they close down these papers … because they’re all owned by the same company and all promote the same things
Yeah it’s insane to me that these failing businesses due to lack of giving a shit will soon have their hand out for Government money and some are eager to prop them up.
Maybe actually have local news, and maybe actually generate interesting stories rather than just printing the AP wire and calling it ‘town name press’.
“news” isn’t going anywhere… it’s happening all the time. I hope new local papers spring up, maybe with more of a DIY aesthetic. Will the reporting be the same? Is there a market for physical newspapers? My heart says yes, but maybe people just prefer to use their phones…
