In a recent Matrix blog post dated November 24, they wrote:

Matrix 1.9 is due out next week. Keep your eyes peeled for an update.

This means that we can expect the new version this week. All new features are described here.

The most important are:

  • Role-Based Access Control
  • Account locking (by server admins) [MSC3939]
  • Official spec support for custom emojis and stickers [MSC2545/MSC1951/MSC3892/MSC4027]

I am so excited especially about the custom emojis! Stay tuned 😎

For those who don’t know what the hell is Matrix:

Matrix defines a set of open APIs for decentralised communication, suitable for securely publishing, persisting and subscribing to data over a global open federation of servers with no single point of control. Uses include Instant Messaging (IM), Voice over IP (VoIP) signalling, Internet of Things (IoT) communication, and bridging together existing communication silos - providing the basis of a new open real-time communication ecosystem.

It will be interest for future releases of Matrix how the change to AGPLv3 will affect its functionality. Although with it being decentralized, the fact that al messages and activity seems to have a permanent record on the server, Matrix is nonexistant for privacy options. I know messages are encrypted, but having a permanent record of user history, it’s on the level of a proprietary system due to no access to user history records, that’s no different than a permanent history that can never be changed or deleted like Matrix.
