Or your friend’s prepubescent brother answers, and you start talking to him like he’s your friend because they sound similar. Then when you realise, you have to awkwardly explain your way out of it and now you’ve forgotten why you even called your friend in the first place.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Emotional abuse of immigrant children by their immigrant parents probably contributes a lot to to why the kids hate their ancestral language(s).
1·1 month agoHave you thought about leaving? I know it’s easier said than done, but where I’m from in Canada there’s a lot of Cantonese speakers. A lot of them fled HK before and after the handover.
I’m not saying you need to immigrate, but there must be pockets in the States where there are more Cantonese speakers who aren’t your family. Or maybe even like a discord server?

6·1 month agoAs someone whose family is from HK, I’d urge you to hang on to Cantonese if possible. I feel like it’s slowly dying due to influence from mainland China. I wish I could speak it but I can’t.
I don’t watch this show so I don’t have a horse in this race, but the idea is that there are few enough opportunities for Asian actors already. Brie is a good actor and widely beloved, there will always be another opportunity for her.
You say they don’t whitewash the character, but then you say they only address the character’s ethnicity once. That’s a bit contradictory isn’t it?
So they just showed up on campus on orientation day and their whole steamer trunk is just filled with picture frames? That’s more pictures than I have in my whole house.

2·2 months agoSame. My department has super low turnover compared to the rest of the company because my boss is great. In my time here I’ve only seen people leave for maternity leave, and it’s a conservative area so they tend to not come back afterwards.
Concerning Hobbits. I picked it to try to set the tone for the day, and it usually works. I’m not a morning person so this is about as good as I can get.
This is from a show called Popular. It was cancelled and ended on a cliffhanger. Just wanted to warn anyone who wanted to watch it, because I loved this show when it aired and was super upset at the not-ending.

Yes, I love typing and do it quickly. I guess I prefer QWERTY but only because that’s the one I learned on and got good at. I hate keys that are too flat, like laptops and some office keyboards trying too hard to look streamlined.
When I’m thinking of how to spell a word, in my mind’s eye I see it being typed out and that’s how I find the correct spelling.

12·6 months agoThis was exactly my pandemic experience as well. “After” covid, I never went back to work in the office so on the rare occasion that I’d pop in, people would always ask how I can stand being home all the time and lament that they’d never get a moment’s peace if they “had to” stay home.
Yeah my husband does this to me too. One time he was camping and texted me just a person’s name with no other context. Like are you about to be murdered and this is the main suspect??
Yes the point is that they’re similar, but with the added layer that you’re supposed to prefer the left because it looks more natural whereas the right looks like they tried too hard to achieve the same look and failed.

There are a lot of farms around here, and thus a lot of farmer’s markets. There’s a lot of craft breweries, and the downtown core has recently been gentrified so there are a ton of small businesses there. A witchy store, a book store, a jewellery store, a collectibles store, a coffee roastery, a barber shop, a piercing/tattoo parlour, and don’t get me started on the restaurants.
There’s been a lot of investment in the area to make it walkable, and I’ve seen a huge uptick in tourists since it looks so appealing now.
