I think the one mod that I relied on added more signals on the bridge length, so multiple trains could go on the bridge at the same time.
Can’t remember the others, but I remember thinking some functions should be part of the base game.

The “core game” is, oddly enough, obsolete. The main “mod” you’ll want is a Patch Pack, specifically JGR’s Patch Pack: https://github.com/JGRennison/OpenTTD-patches/releases
Don’t worry too much about “OpenTTD-patches”, this isn’t just one patch like the ones where you’d have to compile patches into a nightly version yourself and all that crap. JGRPP is pre-compiled and is basically THE new standard version for anyone who knows it exists, as it’s regularly being updated with new features and not just bug fixes yet you can turn off nearly any feature that gets added.
JGR’s a pretty cool guy as long as your reasonable with him, unlike certain other members of the community-

-as I was saying, other than that you’ll want to look for a list of currently-maintained AI scripts (“NoAI”, which just means that the original TTD AI was gutted and replaced by interchangable AIs), as well as maybe pick a game script (GS), and make sure to pick up the following as “modded content” (NewGRFs, or GRFs for short)…
