Did you know? - Spotify runs on Google servers.

How do I know? I get the same 403 error when I try to open Spotify and Google websites.

I used to just torrent music directly to my phone so I could use a good local app, but I’ve gone down the subsonic route, bc it is pretty slick.

    • Torrent / however you get music, put it in a folder on a server.
    • Install Navidrome, point it at your music folder.
    • Get DSub for android, a great player that can even work with chromecast, can cache music locally, create playlists, etc.

It gets worse (“Spotify wants to suggest songs based on your emotions”): https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-55839655

Time to switch to a better alternative.

    1. Make a list of all artists/songs/playlists you enjoy.

    2. Subscribe for a month to either Tidal or Qoobuz.

    3. Rip all songs, albums etc in FLAC via https://github.com/yaronzz/Tidal-Media-Downloader-PRO or https://github.com/ImAiiR/QobuzDownloaderX.

    4. Sit back, relax and stream the highest quality music completely offline without any tracking via Quod Libet (https://github.com/quodlibet/quodlibet).

        1. The core is still proprietary as it runs off Deezer.

        2) You don’t own anything. You merely stream it, which still requires an internet connection.

        1. I’m pretty sure it’s classified as pirating which is illegal and it most certainly shouldn’t be promoted in a privacy community, not to be linked or associated with any illegal activities.

Thanks for the clarification, I couldn’t find anything mentioning downloading music on their git.

Since I just listen to songs there, I don’t see the potential danger. When Funkwhale will get more attention, I’ll create there an account too. (And maybe will switch). I have a FOSS app for listening podcasts. (AntennaPod) But I really start to think Spotify AI is shit because it recommends me songs I hate. I select songs for myself better like letting them do for me.

And I use a VPN, and a Spoti app for mobile, that has trackers nulled and ad-free made by a friend. I run Spotify as a Chromium web-app on desktop.

A VPN probably costs less, and will be useful for longer. No need to rip when you can sail (unless it’s not on the seas yet).

Ive really been getting into Bandcamp lately, I like how they pay their artists more and allow DRM free downloads when you buy an album

Kinda like GOG.com but for music I think

Would reccomend others to check it out

Yeah, Bandcamp is great. Except they don’t have an API for downloading your purchases and no plan to add one. Which means I can’t fully automate adding my new purchases to my Funkwhale instance, but it’s not the end of the world.

They transfer your data to third parties. There is no point joining Bandcamp. Spotify 2.0 and Soundcloud 2.0
