B.C.'s new legislation on short-term rentals will triple the fines for hosts who break the rules, and bring in a number of new requirements for operators in an attempt to return units to the long-term market.

Airbnb, in a statement, said the legislation will not alleviate the housing crisis but instead will take money out of people’s pockets, inflate the cost of accommodations for visitors and decrease tourism revenue.

My eyes rolled so hard they popped out of my head

Yeah we already had a dumbass on the radio stating he (totally wasn’t a landlord) but that the government shouldn’t interfere in the use of property people bought for a given purpose, totally ignoring that these properties are being run as businesses often:

      • without a business license

      • While not properly declaring taxes

      • In areas not zoned for business use

All the of those have been around for longer than AirBnB or the STR craze have existed. Just the zoning thing and the headaches neighbors have faced with these - which are more like hotels than rental properties - should have been enough to put a clamp on it

I cannot wait for the sob stories from people who greedily overleveraged themselves.

The trouble is that the rich also overleveraged themselves, so until that problem is taken care of, the governments will ensure they don’t lose.

NEW - BC has tabled legislation to crack down on short-term rentals. Increase fines, requires registration in new database + biz licences. Only allows short–term rentals of principal residences + one additional unit on that property (such as laneway home or secondary suite).

BC it’s now considered the “gold standard” for regulating short term rentals.

Cute they think this will help. There will be just be a flourishing market in underground rentals.
