    replicated sugar

Has the federation not made some kind of super sugar like synthehol? I can imagine Picard giving this speech to some starving/obese alien the federation is trying to help out

Long ago humans used to struggle with nutrition and caloric intake. Both too much and too little were dangerous. Now we have synthose, a sugar which expands only as much as your body needs it, while retaining a consistently sweet taste regardless of the caloric density

my brother in christ “artificial” sweetners already exist!

This would hit hard if I wasn’t already beating the “Fast food is cigarettes of the current era and you are a stupid fat bastard that can’t resist fat and carbs” over my head

Yes, but they are imperfect and perhaps unhealthy as well. I was trying to hit something more akin to synthehol’s weird perfection, its alcohol that gets you inebriated but has no ill health effects and can be dismissed at will. Artificial sweeteners are fine, but lack the super science of Trek

But like how Scotty knew it wasn’t real because he was a frequent partaker of real alcohol, someone who consumes actual sugar would immediately realize it was artificial sweetener and complain.

Me: “Warm cinnamon rolls, extra frosting.”

          replicator whirring

Me: spits “WHAT IN BLAZES IS THIS??”

I think there’s evidence to show that our taste receptors for sweetness are linked to insulin production. Thus no artificial sweeteners can be consumed without health consequences (insulin spikes, insulin resistance).
